    But more importantly, the notion that gay couples have lots of ready disposable income is pretty much a myth. The right has an interest in this myth so we all can be reminded â€they†aren’t like you and me. Gay publications also are willing to go along with the idea to sell advertising.

    But actually, gays and lesbians are probably a little less well off than other US folks with similar educational and class backgrounds. Carrying varying amounts of rejection through life is a real burden with measurable consequences.

    I was thinking primarily of the kind of people who follow AFA though, Jan. I think the AFA is probably even further behind the gay community in terms of disposable income, largely because there is a significant class aspect to the followers (not the affluent leaders) of groups like the AFA.

    But I appreciate your point. I wasn’t meaning to propagate stereotypes. Although perhaps I’m still doing that.

    These intimidations should never be treated as isolated business decisions. There is the evident externality of moral hazard at work here: capitulation invites abuse.

    Land Cruiser is a Toyota vehicle; I am sure you meant Land Rover or Range Rover, which have been acquired by Ford 4-5 years ago.

We know that the AFA would claim credit for the move, but I don’t know that the AFA claiming credit is actually evidence of anything. Furthermore, I’d hate to play into their hands by inadvertantly helping them to exagerate their influence.

    I agree with emptywheel that Land Rovers and Jags don’t seem to be the kind of cars likely to be purchased by AFA types. But I’m also not sure they’re high up on the wish lists of lots of GLBT folks either.

    Put it this way: I’ve never seen Queer Eye, but maybe someone who has can speculate on whether they would think Rovers or especially Jags are particularly hip and stylish. I dunno, I just don’t see Jags as appealling to The Advocate’s demographics.
