Ambassador Wilson’s book The Politics of Truth has quite a few details on Omar Bongo. He descibes many of Bongo’s shortcomings, a few positives, mentions the French connection, and that when he left they were on good terms. Though I don’t recall anything described as a giant slush fund.

IIRC, when Libby was an issue, I suggested that Fitzgerald check to see if the FBI had swapped hard drives on the VP’s office computers after Aragoncillo was caught in order to keep the evidence bagged neatly on the shelf. If a spy is running through your computer, with or without passwords, forensics people ought to be able to tell which documents were accessed when, and whether they were emailed or sent to the printer. Everything leaves a trace! Since they wouldn’t know which computers he used, they would have to examine them all.
After the missing emails came up, I again referenced the Philippino spy incident, and the hope that the FBI had bagged the original hard drives.
Preservation of evidence is essential in any criminal trial. And, if that evidence is sitting neatly on the shelf, with date and owner, it only makes sense to examine it if the office it came from is a nexus of wrong-doing.
Getting access to those computers now will be impossible given Cheney’s secrecy. At the time, given a foreign spy, the FBI could easily have taken the computers overnight for examination, and done the duplication and swap without anybody noticing that the new drive wasn’t dusty. How many secretaries have opened a computer case?
Surely somebody at the FBI is tech-savvy?

THere are credible allegations that the Filipinos were involved in funding some of the stuff leading up to and away from Iran-Contra (makes sense, really), so I do wonder if there’s a connection–either Cheney throwing someone whom he knew to be sharing info, or a real spy (what does â€real spy†mean with Cheney, whose activities are so contrary to our own interests?).
But remember–Christopher Christie is one of the USAs who seems to have been pushing cases (against Menendez) for political gain. Though in NJ, it’s often safe to assume allegations rest on a very corrupt foundation…

As a contractor, working for various game companies, I sometimes had the alpha versions of game engines or software tools on my hard drive… and the responsibility to protect someone else’s intellectual property from an army of bored 12-year-old hackers with all the time in the world. Virii, adware, spyware, malware, and thieves…. If you have to make a game when the code keeps changing, you really don’t need outside interference. If you are reliable, you learn to be careful with other people’s information, as well as protecting your own hard work.

When Waxman discovered from Knodell that nobody had ever done the required internal investigation of the Plame leak, on top of all the other secuirty lapses, he probably went into low-earth orbit as well. What are these people guarding? It certainly isn’t our interests! And it isn’t the national interest either.
I can’t afford to have even a part-time tech person here, so learned to take beasties apart myself and to avoid sloppy software or nefarious websites and to use a router as well as software to protect my beasties. The government has thousands of people working full-time to secure the data and facilities: to maintain systems, investigate breaches, to preserve information owned by the people of this country. If a game designer understands security, surely a certificated tech engineer somewhere in the government ought to have yelped at the absolute failure to adhere to standards and procedures. I’m only protecting an imaginary world; they are entrusted with the real one.
So we have this guy snooping and stealing information and sending it to another government while working in the offices of Clinton and Gore, Rice (NSA), Cheney, and wherever else he felt like hanging around… for years… with nobody asking questions? And he brags about the infiltration by his fellow nationals? And nobody asks questions? Nobody checks to see who his buddies worked for? (I still want Ralston under oath. Dropping out of site doesn’t mean we’ll forget her.)
Did the people in Cheney’s office tape their passwords to the side of their monitor? If he had to break in and was trying various passwords, why didn’t an alert go to a sysadmin after a certain number of tries? When Rice was heading up the NSA, what information did he extract from her beasties? Whose email was he using? (I can’t imagine him sitting at Mayfield’s computer, rummaging around in the files, and then emailing the juicy docs from her email account… or maybe I can. But, damnity, he ought to have left a track a mile wide. Did anybody check their â€sent mail†folders? Didn’t a firewall log unusual activity?)
At this point even the investigators in the executive branch are looking haphazard and negligent, and any outside firm hired to do the necessary forensics is going to be suspected of political ties, yet the job of securing any and all outside servers, examining the hard drives and records, and insisting upon protocols must be done.
Otherwise, we taxpayers can save a lot of money by eliminating all so-called â€security†or â€defense†agencies and offices. The Office of Security at the White House would be a prime place to start.
You are right about Iran-Contra leftovers still influencing decisions today. Money, drugs, guns, power, and the thrill of sliding below cover. sigh It is one of the reasons I want to see impeachment and trials, so that the younger criminals don’t slither back in 30 years to operate again.

The fact that the White House has a typical underfunded, overworked and mostly ineffectual IT operation is pretty disturbing, but not particularly shocking if, like me, you’ve been around a few years in the industry. But the laxity of the security is frightening. From what I can tell, the security procedures in the Clinton years were fairly decent, but perhaps not vigilantly enforced. Under the loyal Bushies, things are so bad you really have to wonder if it is at least partly deliberate. No one has even mentioned the close contact the OVP and EOP continue to have with known Iranian agents like Chalabi and Ghorbanifar (apologies on the spelling if I got that wrong).
