Libby’s Timing

In my post on the felon of considerable means, rhfactor noted that Libby’s check paying his fine was dated July 2–the same day Bush obstructed justice commuted Libby’s prison sentence. What a coinkydink, huh?

But I checked with the good folks at the Prettyman Courthouse, and at least on the surface, there’s nothing untoward about the date. Libby’s sentence included the following deadlines for his fines:

Total amount due for special assessment $400.00 due within 30 days of the 6/5/07 date. Fine in the amount of $250,000 imposed, due immediately.

In other words, the $400 was due on July 5 anyway. And, well, it looks like Libby’s got the same lackadaisical approach to the word "immediately" as he has with classified information. Because I’d say "immediately" is probably not the same thing as 30 days.

But if you’ve got the President in your back pocket, who cares about deadlines!?!?!?!

Someone asked the question in a previous thread whether Libby’s fine could be refunded if he’s pardoned?

Margaret – I don’t know, but my guess is no refund. Not saying it is not technically possible in some situation, somewhere, (but I doubt here). And as brazen as these clucks are, I would be shocked if they asked for a refund. This is chump change for this crew.

If his appeal is successful; of course. But we were talking about if a pardon was granted. It appears as if our lovable troll has confused apples with grapefruit again.

Thanks everyone for all the loving.

    : )

What I said was that if the Appeal is successful Libby will get his money. It was an oblique way to say otherwise he wouldn’t get it.

But it really needed some meaningul eye contact and facial expression to get the point over.

    Sorry.

Damn. You exercise subtlety and I miss it? Never catch Haley’s Comet either…..

Can someone explain what was up with page 6 of the judgement where it said that Libby did not have the means to pay interest on the fine?

  7. lysias says:

Was Libby waiting to see what Bush would do before he paid up? If so, he must have been in contact with the White House on Monday July 2, as the commutation wasn’t announced till 6 PM, and the Bank of America in D.C. closes its doors at 5 PM.
