The Five Star Hotel Was on the Taypayer’s Dime

That five star hotel that Tommy K was staying in in Greece? You and I are paying for it, it looks like.

A federal judge allowed a New York man who has admitted bribingformer North County U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham to remain free onbond, after an Assistant U.S. Attorney said at a hearing this morningthat the man’s recent trip to Greece was at the direction of federalagents.

U.S. District Judge Larry Alan Burns had called thehearing to learn whether the man, Thomas Kontogiannis, had traveledoverseas without permission. Any such trip requires prior approvalbecause Kontogiannis pleaded guilty earlier this year on a moneylaundering charge.

At today’s hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Forge said the trip was made at the government’s behest.

"Myunderstanding is that everything Mr. Kontogiannis did was not just’with permission,’ but at the direction of agents and otherrepresentatives of the government," Forge said.

Or maybe the FBI is forcing Tommy K to use his ill-gotten gains on such luxury.

TPMM also notes that Judge Burns is going to give John Michael a peek at what his uncle gave the government in exchange for the plea deal.

So once again we see that someone outside of the SD USAs are pulling strings on this case. I would love to know who the â€other representatives of the government†are.
Judge Burns ordered that the federal agents submit a report on why they sent K for a Greek vacation. They have to submit it within 7 days. What do you think the chances are we will see any of that?

And why would fed agents send K to Greece? Did he have to personally pay off some thugs for doing something? And what would be going on in Greece (except fires) this summer. Hmmm….they just had elections. Nah, our federal agents wouldn’t be doing anything to interfere in another country’s elections, nah….

    Oh yeah.

I mean to add a hattip to you, chrisc. And I meant to point that out–who in the govt is involved with this that is not an agent.

Thanks for picking up the ball.

chrisc – all good questions. Don’t know that you will see the real reasons; maybe partial. Any lawyer from DOJ participating in this has got a problem though. They aided and abetted a known criminal violate crystal clear release conditions not to mention assisting in passport fraud. This whole affair is one of the biggest clusterfucks I have ever seen; and I have seen a few.

    bmaz,
I don’t even know for sure if the USAs really know what is going on- it seems they may be just acting at someone else’s orders. I get the feeling that what TK is doing may be illegal and embarassing to the govt, hence, the secrecy. So, I’m wondering if this case doesn’t deserve a closer look by some Congressional committee as part of the oversight of the politicalization of the justice dept. Any suggestions as to who to ask?

I can’t imagine being the person whose identity was stolen or whose mortgage was not properly recorded and not being totally devastated by finding out the government was working with this guy instead of prosecuting him and getting him off the streets.

Hey Darrell Issa, how come you are so quiet about this big-time repeat offender getting away with it again?

chrisc – It is not just the USAs and AUSAs; it is the leadership at DOJ, if the â€agents†are FBI, they are under DOJ jurisdiction. Even assuming none of that applies (and there is zero chance of that), the fact is thanks to TK’s wonderfully wacky and vocal family, we knew he was leaving the country about the second it happened. Any lawyer in DOJ involved in this case had to have known at that point as well; when, how and who did they affirmatively notify? My bet is nobody until other entities, probably the Wilkes/Michael attys, brought it to the Court’s attention. This in and of itself is problematic. Burns has got to be seething; and I think he is not blowing his top right now more than he is because he is letting the government eat themslves further into an intractable dark corner.

the asst u.s. attorney’s statement to the judge is pure weasel speak.

    â€my understanding is …â€,

    i.e.,

    somebody told him such-and-such.

i wonder if the judge questioned him closer on his hearsay, or demanded paper?

  7. Long Tooth says:

Where the US Justice Department is concerned, my cynicism is total. I’m unprepared to extend any of its officials the benefit of even a single doubt. Fact is, I’m surprised Tommy K. is still alive. He obviously is a player who knows too much.

  8. Anonymous says:

Long Tooth — maybe we should spin that in the other direction for a bit and ponder why someone wanted him both out of the country and alive…does he know something that somebody needs badly enough that they wouldn’t keep him here where he could be spied upon under our current domestic spying laws, and where he might blend in a bit, oh, and they need him alive, too?

Far more tantalizing direction of inquiry, to my mind.

Look for the Cheney. Where is he? Last I heard, he was watching a movie about fun with the Taliban in the Whitehouse.

Greece is so close to Iran—geographically speaking.
