Help Me Stave Off Dick Cheney’s Michigan Invasion!

Dick Cheney is coming to my neighborhood on Friday to help scary wingnut Congressman Tim Walberg raise money. Walberg’s district (MI-07) begins about one mile from my doorstep, and I’d really like Tim and his crazy friend Dick to stay away.

Luckily, we’ve got a great candidate this year to replace Walberg–Mark Schauer. Schauer is currently the State Senator representing much of the district, as well as the Democratic leader in MI’s Senate. He is a wonderful person, a very energetic politician, and a true Democrat. And a good friend of the blogosphere.

This week, MI’s blogs, MichiganLiberal and Blogging for Michigan, and Blue America are running a fundraiser for Mark to punish Cheney for coming to Michigan. If you can help out, please do so. Think of it as an effective way to tell Dick to Go Cheney Himself.

Have you issued the press release yet about the congressman Walberg’s fundraiser’s special guest
    HARRY WHITTINGTON?

  2. Ishmael says:

Gerrymandered district, no doubt, but how does a wingnut Republican get elected anywhere near the Peoples’ Republic of Ann Arbor?

    • emptywheel says:

Actually, it’s got some real wingnut havens in it. It goes from the outskirts of A2 (I live on the western edges of the city) to Battle Creek.

We’re going to win it this year (and we will, trust me), because 1) Schauer is very popular in his relatively conservative Senate district, which makes up around half of the CD. And 2) because Ann Arbor has slowly been colonizing the rural area directly to the west of here (we took over Scio township, the first township over, in 2004, and we also won the State House seat in that part of Washtenaw).

So he would have already had a chance, and barring widespread disaffection because of the Clusterfuck (a real possibility), Washtenaw County will put Mark over the top.

And then Washtenaw will be almost entirely blue, from the big city level on up.

  3. MadDog says:

I guess we won’t be seeing much from EW on Friday.

As we all know, when the Denizen of the Dark Side travels, all air traffic in the area is halted.

Presumably this will include electrons in the blogosphere, particularly those taking off and landing in MI.

    Woe is us!

Maybe a large banner with the inspirational words of Dr. Ben Marble would be appropriate:

    Go fvck yourself Mr. Cheney

Man, you folks in Michigan have a lot or gall asking for help from the poor, oppressed souls in Arizona. All you got is the parody cyborg Cheney coming to quack, snarl, fear and leave. We have, and are at least every one in fifty votes or so, sort of, kind of represented by St. John McPain, he of the Stray Cock Express, The clincher is, even if we give him to the inarticulate masses that are capable of actually electing the self serving fraud to be President, we are still represented by John Kyl, John Shadegg and Trent Franks. Well, if we pawn the bloated changeling carpetbagger McPain on the rest of the country, and manage to go from three johns to two pimps, I still don’t see how we are any less pathetic than Michigan. I am not feeling your pain.

You forgot that the poor folk in CD01 are represented by the corrupt Rick Renzi, who also has a special seat on the Stray Cock Express. Never mind that he is under indictment for about 37 crimes, IIRC, he is promising to finish out his term before relinquishing his seat.

Oh, he’s a goner; one way or the other. I am being optimistic. What I described was the best case scenario; for us anyway. Not so much for the country or world, as that would mean McPain was President. See; it’s brutal here. The only way we can go from the beyond imaginably bad to the merely pathetic is to duymp mcCain onto the nation as a whole. That is meager food for souls forgot; i.e not much of a victory. From the home of Linda Ronstadt, we ain’t buying the poor, poor pitiful me schticht from Michigan. The Deetroyt mayor’s wife does narrow the equation a little though….

              • bmaz says:

Well, crikey, I hope not. Although it might reach that level of angst if Renzi were to be re-elected in his cutting edge, state of the art, 5th Amendment inspired “I Will Not Admit Guilt” campaign. And St. Gluehorse McPain loses the Presidential only to return to represent his beloved Arizona with another several years of one out of fifty attendance in the Senate (that one must have been the one where he did a 180 degree turn to vote for Torquemada Torture and Prisoner of Zenda Commissions and Unlawful and Indefinite Detentions Act).

                • watercarrier4diogenes says:

Yeah, I didn’t think that was what you meant, either. 8^)

But I did thoroughly enjoy your description of Renzi’s upcoming campaign. Sadly, if he’s still reasonably healthy, your rattlesnake population will no doubt vote him back into the Senate if McPain does run for re-election.

Quick, secede, then arrest Cheney as an enemy combatant.

Did anyone find out why he and the misses flew to Dallas last week? I looked up heart specialists and found two possible destinations: one for transplants and one for cardiac therapy.

  6. Ishmael says:

EW – Re the clusterfcuk – if Hillary wins enough votes and delegates in Texas and Ohio tomorrow to stay viable, resolving the clusterfcuk in MI and FL acquires new urgency – do the proposed solutions (caucus, new primary) keep the open nature of the previous Michigan primary, or will this be resolved by Democrats in the family? The potential for Republican ratfcukery in any do-over, where the nomination is on the line and there are lots of local rich wingnuts like the DeVos is very scary, even worse than having Fourthbranch in the neighbourhood.

    • MadDog says:

My suggestion is for both the Clinton and Obama campaigns “donate” whatever funding is necessary to conduct a “beauty pageant” psuedo-primary in both MI and FL.

These would not be “real” primaries which are controlled by the State Governments (a big problem in FL since it is controlled by Repugs), but controlled by the Democratic party and a “primary” in all but name.

I’m not suggesting this is a pretty solution, but it would give voters of both states their rightful place in selecting the Democratic nominee.

Now how do we allow the right folks in to vote while keeping the Repug spoilers out? I’ll have to think on that one.

      • Ishmael says:

I like that idea, perhaps with both held on the same day as the Pennsylvania primary – there is enough time to prepare if Hillary does well enough tomorrow for it to be fair to everyone, while not perfect, it could be kind of a sudden-death overtime spread among three big states from different areas of the country.

        • MadDog says:

What’s funny is that if both MI and FL had stayed within Democratic pary rules, they’d have gotten the nomination impact that moving their votes ahead in the schedule had intended.

          Funny how things work out.

Now as to holding votes on the same day as PA, I’d could buy into that.

Still trying to figure out how to ensure that only the right folks are allowed to vote.

Most (all?) voter registration lists are managed by Secretaries of State, so we’d have to figure out how to keep the Repug spoilers out while letting Democrats, Independents, and non-registered folks join in the process.

    • emptywheel says:

It’s a very good question. MI always allows cross-over voting. And we’ll have a problem–if we get a Electoral Mulligan–with the people who crossed-over to fuck with the Republicans. That is, those that voted for Mitt to use up Tagg’s inheritance, will they get to vote in the mulligan?

Otherwise, I’d say you keep it open to everyone who DIDN’T vote the last time. Since the GOP had a meaningful primary, that’d only screw over the Tagg-teamers.

After hearing Bill, Hillary, Chelsea, Michelle and Barak Obama in person the last two weeks in Ohio. Chelsea Clinton was the best speaker (so intelligent, poised, and humble too) I have ever heard, but I can’t vote for her yet. (screw population control, I wish Bill and Hillary had at least 10 kids) After watching all of the debates (Republican and Democratic. After reading everything I could get my hands on about Obama and Clinton’s proposed polices. I believe I will be voting for Hillary in Ohio tomorrow. I was going to vote for Edwards (my conscience, those delegates) but now I have decided I hope Hillary wins. I want the debate to continue.

More pressure on both candidates. We have yet to hear McCain, Obama, or Clinton address the Israeli Palestinian conflict, not much about Iran or Clintons “yea” vote on the Kyl Lieberman amendment or Obama’s fence sitting on that amendment.

We have yet to hear one of these candidates made the commitment that Edwards repeatedly made NO LOBBYIST IN HIS ADMINISTRATION. NO INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS EVER LOBBIED FOR A FOREIGN NATION.

Let’s pressure them..NO LOBBYIST IN THEIR ADMINISTRATIONS… I WANT TO HEAR THIS

    • klynn says:

I share your concerns. I am glad you are able to make your vote. Mr. Klynn and I are still pouring through position papers on both. Boy, our hearts were so set on John Edwards… AIPAC ties for both make us nervous…as well as other issues for both. But Reps make us EXTREMELY nervous — so we will make a choice.

Where in Ohio will you cast your vote? We’ll be in Columbus…
I’m still giggling about your @ 20 comments!

      • Leen says:

I will cast my vote in Athens Ohio. Still undecided. Can not stomach Hillary’s 2002 war resolution vote and then her 2007 “yea” vote on the Kyl LIeberman amendment. Obama’s fence sitting on so many issues and then he just “happened” to be out of town when he could have voted “NO” on the Kyl Lieberman amendment. He could have drawn a line in the cement..instead kept his finger in the wind.

When will we hear one of these candidates(McCain, Obama, Clinton) say what Edwards repeatedly said NO LOBBYIST IN THEIR ADMINISTRATIONS.

If I vote for Hillary it will be based on wanting the debate to continue.

When will all of these candidates be forced to address the Israeli Palestinian conflict?
