Trash Talk – Election Weekend Special Edition

Down to the nitty gritty. The big game is Tuesday. No, CTMET, I am not talking about University of Buffalo v. Miami of Ohio. I am talking The Obama State U v. McCain Community College. This OSU isn’t in the Big 10, and we are expecting victory baby!

But the good old boys at ESPN have been scheming to game the pre-election scene. Here is the play ESPN is running:

On the eve of the presidential election, with "Monday Night Football" from Washington as the backdrop, candidates Barack Obama and John McCain are planning to participate in one-on-one interviews on ESPN via satellite.

"We worked with our partners at the NFL to schedule a Monday Night Football game in Washington on this special night, and this presents a unique opportunity for John McCain and Barack Obama to reflect upon the last few months and address a large primetime audience on the final day of the campaigns," Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production, said in a statement.

It will be the first NFL game played in the D.C. area on the Monday night before a presidential election in 24 years. The Redskins defeated the Atlanta Falcons 27-14 on Nov. 5, 1984; Ronald Reagan was re-elected the following day.

The Redskins, in fact, are an accurate barometer for presidential elections. According to Steve Hirdt of the Elias Sports Bureau, who coined the term "Redskins Rule" in 2000, the following bromide has held true for the past 17 presidential elections: If the Redskins win their last home game prior to Election Day, the party that won the popular vote in the previous election wins the White House; if the Redskins lose, the party that lost the popular vote in the previous election wins.

In this Monday’s case, a Steelers win would forecast an Obama victory; a Redskins win would indicate a McCain win.

Lovely. The last time we did this, Reagan won. And we are relying on the Steelers to win this time if we want Obama in the White House. Hope Willie Parker is back. On the plus side, maybe the Stillers will remember the pandering lie McCain pulled using them as a stage prop:

And then McCain told a rather moving story about his time as a P.O.W. "When I was first interrogated and really had to give some information because of the pressures, physical pressures on me, I named the starting lineup, defensive line of the Pittsburgh Steelers as my squadron mates."

"Did you really?" asked the reporter.

"Yes," McCain said.

"In your POW camp?" asked the reporter.

"Yes," McCain said.

"Could you do it today?" asked the reporter.

"No, unfortunately," McCain said.

Here’s one reason he likely couldn’t do it today — the Steelers aren’t the team whose defensive line McCain named for his Vietnamese tormentors. The Green Bay Packers are. At least according to every previous time McCain has told this story. And the McCain campaign just told ABC News that the senator made a mistake — it was, indeed, the Packers.

Now that’s some locker room bulletin board material. Let us hope the Stillers remember the Maine McCain. Funny thing is, knowing McCain, I would place a fair wager that the first story about the Packers was a lie too; there is about zero chance that he would have known even the Packer’s line.

Okay, let’s get to the games.

National Favre League – Well, we know the Steelers have to beat the Redskins. In DC. Oy. Man, all the games this week are good matchups. Probably the two most interesting are the Cowboys at Giants and Packers at Titans. The ‘Boys are due for a resurgence. But not until Romo is back, and that isn’t this week. Gents win at home. Packers have three losses; the Titans have none. Titans are 4.5 point favorites; but my gut tells me this is the week the Titans have a blip and the Cheesers eke out a win.

Bretts at the Bills also interesting. I dunno what the deal is there; Bills are at home though, that is a good bet. Favre messed up by not beating the Raiders; if the Jets win that game, they finish the first half 5-3, instead it looks like 4-4. Cards at Rams and Fish at Broncs also pretty interesting games. I am going to take the upset on both; Rams nip the Cards in St. Louis and the Fish run their Red Grange play set through the paper thin Bronco defense.

One other biggie. Peyton v. Cassell. Don’t laugh, Cassell is getting more comfortable every game; he is now a competent, if not yet good, NFL quarterback. Colts have been in a major funk; pats way more solid than people would have thought. Marcy isn’t going to like this, and I don’t have a good feeling about it, but I’m taking the upset special yet again. Colts and manning bust out with a win. Oh, and by the way, looks like Tom is getting down on one knee for Giselle. Good thing it only requires one knee, that is all he has got these days.

NCAA Gridiron Glory – I want really bad for Texas Tech to whack Texas. Man would that be fun. I am generally for anything that screws with the heads of the twits that populate the BCS Committee, and boy would a Tech victory do that. The other huge game this weekend is Florida at Georgia. Both teams have proved to be more flawed than they were thought to be at the start of the season. Both have overcome the skittish play and seem to be on track now; this is going to be a war. And don’t forget the stunt Georgia pulled last year; that left a mark. Tim Tebow runs over the Bulldogs.

F1 Circus – Well, we are down to the last race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix. Young Lewis hamilton of McLaren leads Felipe Massa of Ferrari by seven points and it boils down to this:

Another Formula One season comes down to the last race of the year, with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa vying for their first career title at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
In a thrilling season in which seven different drivers won races and as many as four led the series in points, Hamilton arrives in Brazil for Sunday’s GP with a seven-point lead over home-crowd favorite Massa.
Hamilton needs only a fifth-place or better finish to ensure he becomes F1’s youngest champion at age 23, and the first British champion since Damon Hill in 1996.

"I have to look at things realistically and appreciate that I have another weekend of maximum effort ahead of me," Hamilton said.

Massa retains a chance to become the first non-European driver to win the title since Canadian Jacques Villeneuve in 1997, and the first Brazilian champion since the late Ayrton Senna in 1991. But he has to win or finish second and rely on Hamilton finishing down the field.

Ferrari leads Mclaren in the constructor’s standings by eleven points; not an insurmountable lead, but a solid one. Last year, Hamilton had the lead over Massa’s teammate at Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen, going into Brazil and all hell broke loose and Raikkonen ended up winning the crown. Although my blood runs red for Ferrari, I think this is Lewis Hamilton’s year. Should be a great race to cap off an excellent season. Don’t count out Fernando Alonso, he may be out of the championship race, but he has been hot lately and would dearly love to upstage Hamilton and Massa to close out the year.

Well, that is the rundown my wheel friends. Whoop it up, suck some cool ones down, and enjoy the games. Why do we play the games? To win the games baby! Let’s get it on and trash it up!

UPDATE From the comments, per some commenter named Emptywheel:

For those who didn’t see this football-related news last night, Brigham Young’s direct descendant is telling his church to fuck off:

Former San Francisco 49ers’ Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young has two official “No on 8″ signs in the windows of his house in Palo Alto. On Friday, there were also three Halloween-themed signs in Young’s yard that also urged people to reject the gay marriage ban.

Young’s wife, Barbara, has also donated approximately $50,000 to the “No on 8″ campaign aimed at defeating Proposition 8. Steve Young, answering a doorbell ring at his home late Friday afternoon, declined to comment about the signs in his yard.

But in an e-mailed statement to the gay rights group Equality California, Barbara Young wrote: “We believe all families matter, and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Prop. 8.”

Good on the Youngs.

Mike Leach tried out a whole new way of playing football, with his wide offensive line. I really love it when people take new strategic approaches to the game (such as Pulaski High School, which never punts.)

Just to reward coaches that open up their thinking, I hope Tech wins.

But in my heart I think this one is more like 56-35 Texas.

    • randiego says:

Tech started the year at #6 or #7, have gone 8-0 and stayed in exactly that spot, while teams with losses go up and down past them in the polls. It’s annoying to watch, but if they win tonight that will definitely move them up.

Tech uses their passing game to control the clock – even though their passing stats are ridiculous, they still manage an advantage in time of possession, which is unusual for passing teams.

PS – I have Time Warner cable, which doesn’t carry the Speed Channel as part of their base package. No F1 for me.

      • JimWhite says:

19 – zip. Very impressive start for the Red Raiders!

Gators have to hope Big 12 teams beat up on each other so that everyone has a loss…

        • freepatriot says:

do the gators play Alabama ???

          sec title game maybe ???

you do realize which one-lose team is ranked highest, right ???

          BOOMER SOONERS

          • JimWhite says:

It would be in the SEC championship game. Gators still have South Carolina, Vandy, The Citadel and Florida State. Let’s see tomorrow night’s rankings. Beating Georgia by that much should help the Gators. And Texas getting embarrassed doesn’t help Oklahoma at all.

If you are right, it’s gonna hurt here in Nashville. When I walked out of court for lunch on Thursday, one of the Marshals was standing outside, telling everyone who walked by “8 and 0 on Sunday”. Everyone agreed.

ah now, don’t get greedy on us! For me, although I wouldn’t root for my NFL team to get beaten, I would be okay with it. A loss or two serves to keep the players on top teams focused I reckon. (Having said that, it’s retarded how much a loss costs NCAA teams). Not that Jeff Fisher needs any help with keeping his players focused, I’ve always thought him to be one of the better coaches in the NFL.

Unlike a certain NFL head coach in my neck of the woods, who seems to have a lot of trouble keeping his defensive player’s heads screwed on straight week-to-week.

That Titans team is tough. We played them twice last year and both games were a dogfight.

  3. dakine01 says:

Actually bmaz, I would give McCain the benefit of the doubt on having named the Packers O line. He was shot down in ‘68 I believe and the Packers had been the champions for most of the previous 4 or 5 years, including the Ice Bowl game, which made Jerry Kramer a star.

Or I might be an idiot.

    • Ishmael says:

Good on the Youngs indeed! Young isn’t just taking a stand that is contrary to that of the Mormon Church, he is taking what could be a controverial position in the all-but officially homophobic world of professional sports that could cost him, even in San Francisco for a 49er legend. There has never been an openly-gay NFL player that I can think of during his playing days, (or baseball, hockey or basketball for that matter. Even in figure skating it is kept in the closet!!) If Condi does become Commissioner of the NFL or President of the 49ers I hope that she rewards Steve for this in some way.

  5. emptywheel says:

As for the Pats, inside the Hoosier Hall, I don’t think the Pats pull this off–there were moments last week when Peyton almost looked like he had an offensive line.

As for the Packers–not in Nashville, I don’t think. It’s almost Lambeau season (though it’s looking crazy warm this weekend in the Great Lakes states). But not in the Titans’ home. I think there will be a lot of picks in this game, but I think the Titans will have more of them.

Finally, as for the Redskins rule, they had to tweak they way they read it, bc it should have been that Kerry won in 2004, so I don’t put much stock in it.

  6. freepatriot says:

I think gordon smith just got ate by the “Law Of Large Numbers”

you can’t get there from here

basically, as I understand it, if you have a large sample, and it represents a substantial portion of the whole, the numbers found in that sample will dictate the outcomes: since any additional samples should fall within the pre-established range

that ain’t how they splained it, but that’s how I unnerstan it

all I “Know” is that when they count the absentees in my county, the national races don’t change more than a point or two for the voter from the precincts

a point or two ain’t gonna save gordo

    • bmaz says:

Freep, we got a trash talk troll. This rogue commenter known as “Emptywheel” keeps comin in here an blowing up my nice predictions. Shows up every damn time. Is makin me look way bad; chick’s killing me. Can ya do somthin about that?

  7. JimWhite says:

The other huge game this weekend is Florida at Georgia.

Just a minor correction. While Georgia is the home team this year, this game is played every year in Jacksonville with the seating split 50:50 for the two teams. Although they are trying to get away from that name, the game is often referred to as “The World’s Largest Cocktail Party”.

I think the Gators are ready to make a push for the BCS championship. If they can beat Georgia by an impressive margin and get a little help, then they should be able to qualify for the game by beating a then #1 and undefeated Alabama in the SEC championship game. The most likely way for this to happen is for the Big 12 South to beat up on each other, starting today with Tech beating the Horns. All of that, of course, would put the Gators against the undefeated but untested Big 10 patsy of the year, Penn State. Poor JoePa. It won’t be pretty.

  8. radiofreewill says:

Like most States, Georgia offers ’specialty tag’ options for cars and trucks.

One of those offerings is ‘Schools of the SEC’, which they started years ago. Right off the bat, Georgia license plates with Auburn Logos started showing-up (they really, actually respect each other.)

Then came All the Rest of the SEC Teams that Sponsored a Team Tag Application…except one.

The Gators were in the midst of taking 15 of the prior 17 Border War Games, and All of Them since the ‘Schools of the SEC’ program started – No Tag.

Then, last year, faced with developing a Permanent Inferiority Complex, Georgia pulled-out all the Stops – including having Coach Richt tell his Dawgs that it would be ‘okay’ if the Whole Team celebrated ‘on the field’ after their first TD, which they did – in Our End Zone – and they went on to win the game.

And, golly wolly, Guess What? The UF Tag was Released!

So, now that we have our Gator Tags, we’re going to get back to Kicking Their Asses this afternoon, and return this series to the Status Quo of the Last Two Decades – no matter how many Pee-Wee League celebration stunts they want to pull!

    Go Gators 42-7!

  9. CTMET says:

Agggghhhh I’ve been called out by a liberal lawyer on the front page of a communist blog run by a an angry lady with a PHD on comparative literature. I’ll never by able to board a plane again…

    • freepatriot says:

      two points

      angry, Irish, same diff

and about that commie blog with a liberal lawyer ???

commies ??? hangin out with LAWYERS ???

what’s the commie party coming to ???

everybody is talking bout how the rats are fleeing the repuglitard party,

now the repuglitards are almost rat free, and we still got lawyers in our party

that’s probably gonna be a problem in the future

      (wink)

yeah yeah, I know I shouldn’t compare lawyers to rats. there are some things that rats just wont do …

  10. randiego says:

I like the take on the Tech vs BCS thing… well done.

My better half is very excited, having already seen her campus on the TeeVee this morning on GameDay, and having that weenie Lee Corso put on the Raider Red mascot costume! Big alumni game watching party at a local watering hole (The High Dive; the place with the LT shrine) this afternoon with lots of Red Raiders in attendance… Go Tech!

Good on Steve Young. Gotta love pro athletes with half a brain.

  11. ANOther says:

Massa on pole in Brazil – Hamilton 4th – but it seems that bmaz and I are tne only ones who care around here.

    • bmaz says:

I think Hamilton will do enough to win the crown, I think all he has to do is finish fifth or better. But I am rooting hard for Felipe.

  12. randiego says:

Thinking about U-verse, the AT&T product. Their pricing structure is superior, but they don’t carry the Padres. (Padres Channel 4 completely owned by Cox, and non-cable competitors get shut out – Nice.)

  13. masaccio says:

Tough loss for the Irish today. The defensive line just not good enough compared with the Pitt offensive line. We have had trouble with the run all year.

  14. Gunner says:

bmaz I think Massa is going to do it, this will exciting and it will come down to the end. But you never know in the circus. One thing is for sure it has been a great season, and of course I will be ready for next year when it gets here

  15. BayStateLibrul says:

    Bmaz,

    Listen to this Pat fan:

Barack Obama and the New England Patriots — by two landslides…

    • randiego says:

wow, all the Tech fans (like 25 of them) went absolutely apeshit on that play.

I couldn’t believe they tried a deep out like that. Then, I just saw an interview with Harrell where he said it was a planned play – if the DB doesn’t look, throw it behind him. They went to the replay, and sure enough the DB never looked. Very impressive.

      • bmaz says:

Unbelievable. Red Raiders have another huge home game next weekend though, Oklahoma State.

Down goes Texas! Down goes Texas! (that was for Freep)

    • bmaz says:

Could be. I know you won’t like this, but I would put USC ahead of the Sooners and Florida. Be interesting to see if the Red Raiders leapfrog Penn State; personally I think I would put them over PSU, don’t know what the rating folks will do though.

      • randiego says:

Penn State would only be the third best team in the Big 12 South. If Tech doesn’t leapfrog them, it wouldn’t surprise me, but it would be total BS.

Of course, next Tech has to play Oklahoma State THEN Oklahoma. Talk about a tough schedule.

      • JimWhite says:

They might do that. There also are still a bunch of games to be played. I also left Texas out of that list. They just might stay ahead of Oklahoma (sorry, Freep).

        • freepatriot says:

if Oklahoma beats tch and Ok St, and Ok St beats tech, texas is still first in line for the big 12 title game

if texas loses the big 12 title game, Oklahoma could be the only Big 12 team still standing

none of this matters now, unless Alabama loses

I think Penn State will win out, and be the number 2 team in the bcs championship, so Alabama, USC, an the big 12 are all fighting for a single spot

I don’t like it, but that’s the way it is

  16. bmaz says:

    BULLSHITTTTT!!!!

That is just wrong. Glock just stopped and handed it to Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton may claim the championship crown I guess, but that is as tainted as can possibly be if you ask me. I wonder what McLaren paid Timo Glock to buy the championship for Hamilton?? What a chickenshit pile of crap; Ferrari and Felipe Massa were robbed. Hamilton wins a VERY tainted crown. Congratulations Lewis; you do not deserve it.

    • ANOther says:

I think that you are dead wrong, bmaz (and I, too, wanted Massa to win the title). The only reason that Glock was ahead of Hamilton was that he stayed on dries when pretty much everyone else changed to intermediates. When the rain got harder, he just didn’t have the grip. You can certainly say that Hamilton was lucky, But he was desparately unlucky last year – anyway, a great year’s racing.

      • bmaz says:

Possibly, but it was the way he suddenly went wide and stopped/slowed that looked unnatural, even for the circumstances, to me. David Hobbs went nuts at the time it happened saying “He stopped, Glock just stopped” or something to that effect. I dunno, I need to see replays, and I didn’t TIVO it. I understand the wet situation and relative tire compounds; still looked goofy to me. I am totally in the bag for Ferrari though, so take it with a grain of salt.

  17. randiego says:

I’ve got the Titans/Packers. Aaron Rodgers looks pretty good, and that Titan running back is a beast. Great game so far.

A few upsets in the making… Jets leading Buffalo, KC leading Tampa, Cincy leading Jax.

    • bmaz says:

Aaarghh! I have the motherfooking Cardinals and Rams. Blergh. Chris Johnson is a man among boys, was in college too. He is really good.

      Go Brett!!!

  18. randiego says:

Green Bay has been moving the ball up and down the field all day. As soon as they get close then the Titan’s D shut’s ‘em down or Rodgers throws a pick.
