Mark Your Schedules

I’m working on stuff that I will post later this PM. But in the meantime, I wanted to draw your attention to two upcoming events.

First, on Friday, May 22, at 10:45 AM ET, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse will be joining us at the front page for a chat. He’ll be here for 45 minutes, and Senators’ schedules are always subject to change, so plan to be flexible. In the meantime, be sure to think of questions and mark your schedule for Friday morning. Here’s your chance to pose all the intelligent questions you’ve said you’d like to ask Senator Whitehouse in comments.

Second, as you may have heard, the Hillman Foundation has honored me with their award for blogging this year. I’ll be traveling to NYC next Wednesday to receive the award. Like any blogger, my success is really a tribute as much to the quality of our community as to any thing I do, so I’d love to see those of you from the NYC area there.

Here’s the invite. The ceremony is at:

Wednesday, May 27, 2009
5:30 – 8:00 PM
Program begins promptly at 6:30 PM

Hudson Theater at the
Millennium Broadway Hotel
145 West 44th Street, New York City

But you gotta RSVP and attire is businesswear (so you probably shouldn’t dress like DFHers).  There are a lot of great honorees, including Jane Mayer, so even if I bore you, the others won’t.

And if you plan to attend, drop a comment in the thread so I know to look out for you.

    Whitehouse!!!!

Kudos to Marcy! And have a safe trip!

Not to be paranoid… but please, watch your back!

  2. skdadl says:

So well deserved indeed, EW. I hope you have a wonderful evening — and there will be pictures?

Great news as well about Senator Whitehouse’s visit. I’ll be reading along.

  3. klynn says:

So Whitehouse got back to you!

Again congrats on the Hilllman. Wish we were in NY, I would be there to witness the history!

Got a question. I will be at a commitment on Fri for my family. Can we post questions somewhere to be asked while we are absent?

      • phred says:

Congrats EW! I popped in quick and added my questions to the list, but just scanned the thread and feel a teensy bit sheepish about not properly adding my voice to the rousing cheer here on your behalf : ) Well done, Journalist Emptywheel!

      • acquarius74 says:

Marcy, I add my congrats for your well-earned Hillman award. I also must add that I hope you take special care; I’m sure you have not escaped the notice of those whom your reporting has ‘outed’ for their dark deeds.

I’m not very good at live-blogging; by the time I read all the comments and answers the visitor has left the scene. I hope you, phred or Mary (or someone) will ask Sen. Whitehouse to officially demand of the Dir. of FBI that the Sen. Judiciary Committee be furnished with unredacted copies of all records pertaining to Aafia Siddiqui and her 3 children (2 of whom have disappeared – the youngest only 6 months old at time of capture). Same to CIA for records of KSM’s children.

        Thank you.

  4. Leen says:

Our favorite Marcy hits the big time. You so deserve it.

Will be thinking about questions for one of the Senators who gives me hope

    • freepatriot says:

Our favorite Marcy hits the big time

      Muse Marcy ???

      or

      Marcy Muse ???

      I can’t decide

yer monument is gonna be a little late …

  5. Evolute says:

Like a fine wine you are EW …that never runs dry, WoW!

I wrote this some time ago but couldn’t back it up.
    Now I can, cheers!

Haven’t said much of late, but this is still one of the best read on the web. I guess my giving of alms to the deserving is a bit tardy as well — last time it funneled to an address in my backyard (Sunset Blvd.)

As refined as you are — the supporting cast makes it that much better. Thanks to all.
All but one(s) that think they can run with the big dogs, all bark and no bone. 2u i say STFU

  6. bigbrother says:

Marcy please send Sen Whitehouse a flow chart of the alleged crimes that he can use to justify a Special Prosecutor that you can consult to. In Advance of his visit here.

  7. ffein says:

Congratulations Marcy! This is a well-deserved award. I also loved that Keith Olbermann correctly referred to you last night as “Journalist.”

  8. radiofreewill says:

So, you’re Going Award Receiving next week, huh?

Everything’s so volatile at the moment – who knows what could happen?

Judge Bates sez Some Detainees Can Be Held Indefinitely, because:

In his opinion, Bates said he agreed with the Obama administration that “the president has the authority to detain persons that the president determines planned, authorized, committed or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, and persons who harbored those responsible for those attacks.”

I take this to mean that Obama can ‘detain’ anyone – anyone – connected with the planning and execution of 911 – which seems to have been the longed-for PNAC Pearl Harbor…

So, I hope you realize that your well-earned trip to New York City is a lot to put on bmaz and the rest of us in the Wheelhouse Gang!

Still, you can count on US – We’ll be good while you’re gone!

But could you at least stock-up the liquor cabinet, and put some pizzas in the fridge, too, please? That way, somehow – if we really have to – we’ll find a way to cover The Arrest and Perp-Walking of BushCo until you get back!

It’s the least We can do!

    Congrats again on the Hillman!

  9. ElanaLevin says:

RSVP link’s not working. Email [email protected]

I’m thrilled because to me, Marcy represents exactly the sort of blogger the award was created for: an independent blogger who is doing groundbreaking reporting on issues the corporate sponsored media would rather ignore.

Sidney Hillman, who the awards are named for was the president of
Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, a predecessor union of the union I work for, Workers United.
So I’ll be volunteering at the awards next week. If anyone is coming be sure to say hi!

  10. fatster says:

Congratulations on an award well-deserved, EW. We are all looking forward to many more coming your way. Somewhere, I suspect, I. F. Stone is beaming.

  11. orionATL says:

    ew

    congratulations.

you are truly superb reporter – persistent, highly analytical, and with a fine moral compass.

would there were a dozen like you working for wapoop and the nytimes. our nation would be much, much the better for it.

    • Peterr says:

Knowing Marcy, she’ll probably liveblog it herself.

      *g*

      Or . . .

Marcy, any chance of getting the Hillman Foundation folks to webcast it? Bmaz could lead an Award Ceremony Trash Talk celebration thread while we watch online.

  12. JasonLeopold says:

congratulations on your prestigious Hillman Award! That is outstanding! Quite an honor. And well deserved.

  13. dmac says:

    Congratulations Marcy!

I added a little bit to your ‘lunch pail’ again this morning. Sorry I couldn’t be the one to push it over $100,000. That would have been a thrill.
Only mentioning it so that other readers will know; every little bit helps, help buy some highlighter pens or post-it tabs for Marcy. Or lunch. Copy fees. Notepads. Cd’s. Flash drives. That’s how I look at it anyway.

Have a great time on your trip to New York and celebrating accepting your award, enjoy every second. Being on the stage will be a new vantage point-I am sure you will absorb it and put it to good use.

  14. freepatriot says:

Damn, looks like I already got “a mark” scheduled for that day

    what’s a grifter to do ???

too many marks, not enough time

and did anybody see the idiot from the Pittsburgh steelers ???

he refuses to go to the whitehouse, because Obama only invited the team because they WON. I can’t remember his name, bit he’s pissed because, if Arizona would have won the superbowl, Obama would have invited the Cardinals instead of the steelers

personally, I thought these guys were supposed to wear helmets when they play football. but this guy apparently just painted a logo on the side of his head …

but we can’t ignore the results

HEY, dougie feith, your title of “Stupidest Guy On The Planet” is being challenged here

personally, my money is on feith, cuz he got that way without playing football

    • randiego says:

      hah hah hah… ouch!
Any Stiller fans out there?? I know there’s at least one of you…

      … crickets …

  15. Arbusto says:

Last night Keith Olbermann credited “journalist Marcy Wheeler” on one of his stories. National recognition! Just remember us hoi polloi while eschewing what fame brought Woodward.

What prize do I get for being the 100,000th person to offer congrats? I know; I get to keep reading your outstanding investigative journalism!

  16. Mormaer says:

EW congrats on a well deserved award. I am looking for a cryptography prize for which you may be nominated. Have fun.

  17. phred says:

    Questions for Whitehouse:
    1) Have you seen the OPR report yet?
    2) Will the original draft be made available as well as the final version?
    3) How soon may the public expect to see it?

Not sure I will able to join in on Friday, I will if I can…

Have fun in NYC! If you see LHP, give her a pat on the back from me for all of her torture posts…

    • Loo Hoo. says:

Hey! Maybe LHP could liveblog it! Cuz I love the way she spells when she types really fast. *g*

Wish I could be there, Marcy.

      And Whitehouse? Cool.

      • phred says:

Oooo, now there’s an idea… I would love an LHP liveblog of EW’s award ceremony : )

  18. phred says:

    Another question for Whitehouse:

    4) Many of us are keeping an eye on the calendar because we are worried the statute of limitations will expire for various crimes the Bush administration may have committed. Is Congress paying attention to these dates as well, and if so are they trying to stall on purpose or will they commit to ensuring their investigations will conclude with sufficient time so that charges may be brought as indicated by the evidence?

    • pdaly says:

I agree, phred. Seems most of Congress knows ahead of time which wrong steps to make in concert. If so, who is coordinating the dance? What is the end game?

Congrats again, empytwheel, on the Hillman Foundation award. Wish we all could be flies on the wall when you and Jane Mayer meet and talk.

Thanks for bringing Senator Whitehouse to FDL.

  19. greenbird4751 says:

Simply by changing a few words, I find the sentiments precisely fit the torturers we need to investigate:
From BBC online: “…The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, said those who perpetrated violence and abuse should be held to account, “no matter how long ago it happened”.

“Every time there is a single incident of abuse in the Catholic Church, it is a scandal. I would be very worried if it wasn’t a scandal… I hope these things don’t happen again, but I hope they’re never a matter of indifference,” he said.
I bolded; but you, Marcy, ARE bold–to a submolecular degree.
and here’s a description of how you seem to work: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/submolecular

  20. dosido says:

Yay Marcy! Thank you so much for all your hard work.

Please enjoy your well deserved day in the sun!

  21. dosido says:

I would like to suggest to Senator Whitehouse that his office or others start using “content verification” software to assure themselves that when a slimeball gooper claims there are no changes to a bill up for renewal, there are no changes to a bill.

  22. Batocchio says:

    Congratulations. Well deserved.

Whitehouse is sharp, and I’m glad to have him in the Senate.

  23. cbl2 says:

only one question for Senator Whitehouse:

why isn’t Marcy Wheeler working for the committee ?

    hmmmm, we’re waiting …

  24. ghostof911 says:

Suggestion for Whitehouse — lead a revolt to remove Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader.

  25. phred says:

    Another question for Whitehouse:

    5) As Congress conducts its oversight over such programs as extraordinary rendition, does it have a list of all people so detained and rendered? Does Congress know the fate of each of those detainees? Can it comment on the whereabouts of the missing detainees? In particular is Congress aware of the whereabouts of KSM’s children and Siddiqi’s children?

  26. perris says:

I’m gonna be in new york and already responded to invite

can’t wait to see everyone there, maybe we can all meet at a coffee shop mid afternoon before ceremony

  27. bluejeansntshirt says:

Will be out of town for your award *kicking self* but am sure other NY pups will be in attendance. Will be with you all in spirit and will raise a few glasses next Wednesday in celebration.

Congratulations and my sincere thanks to you and all the tremendous commenters here at emptywheel.

  28. karmamountain says:

Congratulations Marcy. I’d love to see you there! The RSVP goes to a 404 error.

  29. emerson says:

Outstanding work Marcy, and an honor well-deserved.

I’ve emailed Democracy Now and suggested they contact you for a possible appearance while you are in NY. Don’t know if you’ve met Amy, but I think you are two of a kind.

Her show today with Jane Mayer and Phillippe Sand was excellent. The only thing missing was you.

    http://www.democracynow.org/2009/5/20/torture

    • acquarius74 says:

Thank you, emerson, for the link to democracynow’s interview with Phillipe Sands and Jane Meyer. I really wish someone who knows how to put video clips into diaries would write a front-pager on this.

  30. readerOfTeaLeaves says:

Question #1 for the venerable Sen. Whitehouse: How can the Congress even pretend to achieve ‘Congressional oversight’ over intel, military operations, and national security issues until corrupt budget processes that allow the administration to eviscerate oversight, plus anti-social economic entities (like tax havens, offshore banking, and ‘credit default swaps’) are thoroughly erradicated?”

Question #2: How can the Congress, the WH, or the nation expect the military, intelligence, or related agencies to be able to attract and recruit ‘the best and the brightest’ when anyone can see that a VP ‘outed’ a CIA asset charged with tracking WMD, yet the VP and his network are never brought to justice? Does Congress honestly expect people to work for a bureaucracy that’s going to sell them, their hard work, and their valuable information out?

Question #3: Assume that the US public is weary of he-said/she-said, and also weary of what appears to be ‘political payback’ if they hear about Congressional Hearings related to the WMD, the Iraq War, torture, the economic meltdown, and related topics.

You are communicating to a public comprised of people who may be commuting 2+ hours/day, worried about credit card debt and/or employment issues, time-and-sleep deprived, and with very little experience of participating in government processes — not city council meetings, not commissions, not even public presentations. Would the Congress give care and thought to the educational obstacles involved in holding hearings?

How would the Congress seek to lay out a list of ‘objectives’ that are clear for citizens to follow — and use to assess whether Congress had fulfilled each, specific, simply worded objective?

How would the Congress ensure that any kind of ‘background materials’ for interested viewers would be either incorporated into committee hearings, and/or provided as supplemental materials through Congressional offices, news outlets, or other free, publicly available means?

(I have a specific interest in adult illiterates, so the idea that Congress is going to release a ’study’ or a ‘report’ or a ‘written document’ would not, IMHO, come close to educating adult illiterates — who may comprise as much as 30% of the US adult public — with the ‘tools’ they need to follow ‘the story’. This concerns me, as the adult illiterates that I’ve been fortunate to work with are often very smart people, extremely competent and quite skilled in fields where they are not required to read documents. Leaving this ‘educational role’ to the teevee networks strikes this onlooker as an impossible task, and also a failure on the part of Congress to take this problem seriously. If left to teevee, the whole hearings will be framed as ‘political conflict’, and if that’s the case then I’m convinced that many will ‘turn out’ due to extreme alienation.)

Question 4: Assuming that I’ve made a reasonable case in my previous question (and long digression), then how would Congress approach the key task of ‘refreshing’ viewers by summing up the previous meetings, and setting up objectives for each hearing.

(This is related to the ‘public education’ function, but is also used by episodic media: “In our first episode/meeting, we wanted to accomplish X, and we did. In our second episode, we built on X by adding Y. Today, we will add Z…)

As I’ve watched some of the Congressional hearings, one thing that I’ve found striking is the almost ‘modular’ aspect: I don’t know whether there was a previous hearing that I should have watched first, or what related hearings or materials I should know about — which makes it all rather befuddling.

If hearings were held, would someone please consider that many ‘out here’ like myself may be extremely interested, but need some better ‘information design’ to track the key issues, key materials, and figure out where in the Big Knot Of Events each hearing is located?

Should anyone on Sen. Whitehouse’s staff, or any committee members, read this comment, it’s my devout hope that at least one or two of the points will be given some consideration.

The Bush administration (and even it’s predecessors) assumed that ‘the little people’ like us taxpayers didn’t need to understand a thing about what they were doing in D.C. Having observed where that led, it’s my very humble view that if this nation is to have any form of democratic government, any hearings really need to do a better job of ‘teaching’ people how government should work, and why it matters.

It’s my view that the ‘educational function’ that FDL and EW lent to the Plame investigation are part of what made it so riveting to such a diverse group of onlookers. We didn’t feel stupid; we could ask for clarification and receive respectful explanations. You see the remarkable sense of curiosity that has resulted.

    Kind Regards,

    rOTL

Made some changes and now will attend the Hillman awards on the 27th.

RSVP’d this morning and am so looking forward to meeting you.

  32. timbo says:

    Seriously though…

Wish I was in NY to catch the awards. You deserve that award and many more.

  33. JohnLopresti says:

    To Senator Sheldon Whitehouse:
What has become of the chart you presented concerning the US attorney politically based purges in the prior administration: i.e., have the current attorney general and president restored a more separate relationship between DoJ and EOP.

    To Senator Sheldon Whitehouse:
If you think we can avoid the pitfalls of our taking scandal at “war’s” “atrocities”, or even post”war” tribunal reprisals prosecuted to obtain some national or ethnic sense of catharsis, in the present context of ushering the US out of invidiously becoming a longterm supporter of torture during many subsequent presidencies based upon the isolative executive theories advanced during the prior presidency, do you see a congressional path to support ways to overcome that heritage of torture as executive policy unilaterally devised.
