Road Trip Open Thread

Mr. EW and I decided today was the day to drive to Philadelphia. I hear they have Elves there…

If bmaz has recovered from watching his beloved Old Man River North, Brett Favre, get shellacked the other night, he’s likely to come in and post something interesting … or at least open the liquor cabinet.

If anything really exciting happens, email me–I’ll check in a few times from the road.

In the meantime, behave yourselves!

Have a safe and happy trip, EW, and happy winter solstice to you and Mr EW and bmaz and all friends here. The sun is coming back to us (or at least it is for us northern hemispheroids — all antipodeans present, have a good midsummer’s day).

      • skdadl says:

Leen, I clicked through, and guess who I got? Beauregard. That’s ok, though — I actually enjoy listening to Beauregard sometimes, imagining things I could say back to him — there are so many.

  2. lawordisorder says:

    LOOOOOOL

Have a merry cristmas everybody…the snow is in for a white cristmas here in good old viking country

BTW Vikings don’t surrender they reload….lol Be safe everybody and drive safe EW

  3. phred says:

Happy Holidays to one and all!!!

Have a great road trip EW. Keep your fingers crossed for those of us heading out into the snows of the Midwest…

    In a pinch maybe I can hitch a ride in Santa’s sleigh ; )

  4. BoxTurtle says:

Snow or no, the Penny Police will be at every spot where you could possibly exceed the speed limit.

Boxturtle (And do you think it’s wise to give Deadeye advance notice of your travel plans? :-) )

  5. Quebecois says:

Safe travels EW and hubby. Enjoy philly if you can find it, I hear it’s under three meters of snow. I’ll be having a white christmas in Montréal, I really should start dating again.

  6. fatster says:

Whatever you do, EW and everyone else driving during these holidays, please drive safely! We want everyone back safe and sound to sing a virtual round of Auld Lang Syne. Or whatever.

    • Leen says:

      Ditto. Travel safe folks.

Would really be something if our Reps had to bunk down together in the Senate.

Just watched the Reid press conference. All back slapping. They are going to put the most colorfully wrapped “Insurance and Pharmaceutical companies Profit Protection Act” under the American people’s Christmas tree. All the while the fat cats of these industries slide out the back door of the White House dressed as Santa Claus with their pockets filled with billions.

      Ho Ho Ho

    • BoxTurtle says:

Your link jumps into the middle of the article, there’s some good stuff prior.

You have to wonder if BushCo wanted OBL to escape or if they were simply screwups of the highest order.

Boxturtle (I can make a case either way)

  7. BoxTurtle says:

For those of you who follow North Korea, Time has an amusing yet accurate sounding made up response to Obama’s letter here.

Boxturtle (Why is it the the humorists seem to make their points better than the pundits?)

  8. person1597 says:

    Isn’t it Fitz’s birthday today?

And where’s the Hadley email? (Did Hadley never get it?)

I want Rover’s hide… Still… Ruck Fove [but not Favre].

    Buck Fush. Juck Foe.

Long live hippies, mods and bloggers.

Oh, the sun is back up. Guess it went off-line for awhile but now it’s fixed.

Wow! Congrats to the Fitzgerald family. He and EW have a LOT in common:

Fitzgerald attended Our Lady of Help Christian’s grammar school, before going on to Regis High School, a prestigious Jesuit Catholic school in Manhattan, and received degrees in economics and mathematics from Amherst College, Phi Beta Kappa, before receiving his JD from Harvard Law School in 1985.[3] Fitzgerald played rugby at Amherst [2] and while at Harvard, he was a member of the Harvard Business School Rugby Club.

  9. Jeff Kaye says:

I guess, on the whole, you’d rather be in Philadelphia.

Well, have a great time and a safe trip. The rest of us will nurse our Xmas grudges, and give thanks for Firedoglake, and such things.

    Happy holidays!

    • Hmmm says:

Ohgoodgawd. Another fine product of “Graphic Designers Unaware of Pre-Existing Condition Premiums nor Half-Trillion-Dollar Medicare Budget Reductions, Inc.”?

          • Petrocelli says:

Despite my best efforts, the others have elected not to BBQ the Bird … and we’re gonna be above freezing …

Extra big hugs to you, skdadl … may 2010 bring much joy to you all !

            • skdadl says:

Hugs along the lake to you too, Petrocelli.

OMG but it was coolish here today. -11 C. (I used to know what that is in Merkin, but either way, it’s pretty cold.) I don’t know that I’m looking forward to the melt on Thursday, though, Petro. In the back of my mind is always the memory of the great ice storm of ’98 — it didn’t get quite this far west then, but global warming, y’know — if we’re hovering around freezing and being rained upon, we are in danger, methinks. I’ve got six kittehs, Petro — in an ice storm, there’s nothing I could do.

We’d just have to curl up together in our L.L. Bean down blankets and eat tuna and Amy’s organic lentil soup out of tins from the basement until you arrived with a rental van to save us all.

              • Petrocelli says:

Eeep … that was a terrible storm.

I’ll send you my phone number, just in case … call me anytime !

  10. JohnJ says:

Since there is no subject and I have a whole 5 minutes before leaving for work.

    Hi all

Please no comments about white Christmas, it’s “cold” here at 48F. I miss the (occasional) snow. For that matter, I miss the change of seasons. For that matter, I miss HAVING SEASONS!

Well, off to do another 10 hours of my 70 hour week, putting little parts on circuit boards. (We may be doin’ 8 hours on Thursday, at 2.5X very-little).

  11. bobschacht says:

Well, looks like Mr. Prez is siding with Ezra against EW:

    News Alert
    02:40 PM EST Tuesday, December 22, 2009

In an exclusive interview, President Obama rejected the criticism that he has compromised too much on health-care reform legislation, challenging his critics to identify any “gap” between what he campaigned on last year and what Congress is on the verge of passing.

    For more information, visit washingtonpost.com.

I guess here is where we find out that Obama *meant* all those weasel words that conditioned all his statements.

    • fatster says:

Waaah! I got all but one. And look what you’ve done to skdadl @ 44. She’s now typing in a foreign tongue. (It’s not a foreign keyboard, though, because it doesn’t make little marks above some of the letters in the words.)

  12. 4jkb4ia says:

I.e. what they most needed was someone who would give them 15 wins if they were going to let Wang go. They will get that. After wishing EW a safe trip and happy times with family runs away again.

  13. 4jkb4ia says:

After clicking on fatster’s link, Laredo, Texas, without a bookstore! Not one! Bookstores may not be public utilities like libraries, but having a place where you can go to own books and interact with others is important. If you own books and do not borrow them from others you can live with those books. You can easily look up things that you forgot. You can help to support the authors to make a living.

  14. Petrocelli says:

There’s a blitzkrieg of Trolls over at the MotherShip … think I’ll hide near the Likker Cabinet and dream of a Green Christmas.

Where’s Freep and that blasted HatPin ?!!

Happy Holidays Marcy, Mr. EW, Bmaz, fellow Wheelers and of course, Drew Fookin’ Brees !

  15. freepatriot says:

    Enjoy philly

    behave yourselves

Favre didn’t get shellacked the Viking defense fell apart.

this thread is full of good advice you’ll never have to use …

    Happy Saturnalia everybody

  16. Petrocelli says:

This isn’t good … the solution became crystal clear after my 3rd glass of Shiraz.

Now, what excuse do I have to pour a 4th ?

EDIT: Reply to Mary @ 39

    • Mary says:

& 45 – but I take no responsiblity for EOH showing skadadl how to speak in tongues

Each time you get a different tree, but afer you do the first couple, it gets way easier. Psst – Petro, you can just keep twirling the last couple of bulbs around forever to get to the next glass. *g* If I’ve driven Jeff loopy, things are bad! The worst part is how they label it a kids game. The best part is the glu-oop noises. They make me remember old timey pac man and tank-shooting vid games from when I was a kid.

      • Petrocelli says:

*Smacks forehead* like Agent 86 … Of course, the ole circling the drain answer trick !

I was talking to my kids about those old arcade games, like Pacman, Space Invaders, etc. Costco has a retro Arcade on sale, with many of those games.

Defi on my Wish List, after I get published and yes, I’ll share with all of you … for a small donation to the Wheelhouse.

  17. Quebecois says:

OT, looks like Bild and the BBC are saying that Schu made a one year deal with benz.

    Evening bmaz, Petro!

    • Petrocelli says:

      Mon ami !

Can’t wait for the start of F1 … luckily we have Hockey and more Hockey to tide us over …

      • Quebecois says:

Hockey, schmockey. I haven’t watched a whole game in 25 years, i have been to see a few live at the Bell Center and the defunct Forum. One thing you have to remember, watch the puck… Saw a spectator eat a slapshot in the knee, that wasn’t pretty.
