Coffin Corner Trash Talk

Okay, I tried to get folks interested in the criminal docket report yesterday, to sadly little avail. Oh well, so be it. Let us dive headfirst into trash then.

First up is the Pac-12 Championship game between the Oregon Quackers and the Cats from Arizona, played in the Big Blue Jeans in Not Frisco (yes, I am trying to piss off those NoCal locals who HATE the term Frisco). Halfway through the third quarter and the Quack Attack is just rolling Rich Rod and the Sad Cats. Ouch. All I can say is, yo, enjoy it Cats, unlike ASU, this is as close to the Rose Bowl as you are gonna get. I rooted for you for one night, and look what happened! Bygones baybee!

That was last night, today brings us conference championship games like Ohio State and Wisconsin, Kansas State and Baylor, Alabama and Missouri, and Florida State versus Georgia Tech. I’ll take, respectively, Wisconsin, Baylor, Crimson Tide and Tech in a wild upset. In some NCAA criminal docket new, Jameis Winston is one of the most reprehensible pieces of human trash I have seen in years. He refused to testify in his disciplinary hearing, but cravenly filed an unnecessarily graphic and lewd belligerent letter and then released it to the press. Then, not satisfied with what he has already done, Winston is mentally raping his victim once again. Winston and his lawyers now are threatening to intentionally try to separate the victim from her lawyers by suing the lawyers for defamation. This won’t work, but will eat up time and money for the victim trying to fend it off. It is one of the most assholish things I have seen from an attorney in some time; Winston is one nasty piece of work. Unbelievable.

In the pros, There are a morgue full of games that may put the losers in coffins. This is similar to a guillotine day. The Steelers play the Bengals twice in the last four weeks, starting in Cinci this weekend. They probably need to win both if they want to win the division. Unfortunately, I don’t think they get it done. The Browns, like the Steelers, have a 7-5 record and can’t lose many more games and still hope to make the playoffs. Don’t think they get it done at home against the Colts either. Colts are not flashy, but Luck has them on a roll. The Ravens and Fish play in Miami. Both of them are also 7-5, and the winner will be looking good and the loser not so much. That game is really a tossup, but I like the Fish at home.

The Chefs come to the desert to meet the suddenly reeling Cardinals. The Cards are very tough at home, and they desperately need a win after two losses in a row because they finish the schedule out agh the Rams, home for Seattle and away at Niners. There is an air of doom and gloom right now in Phoenix, with the fear that the Cards may no win another game and will not even make the playoffs despite the 9-1 start. There is good reason for that fear.

The best game of the week is Seattle at Philly. The Squawks have their groove back and the Iggles are now sitting, at 9-3, with the best record in the league (shared with Green Bay, AZ, NE and Denver). It is the age old battle of lockdown defense versus high flying offense. Mark Sanchez has been pretty good since replacing Nick Foles, but hasn’t faced anything like Seattle’s defense. I’ll take the Squawks for a key road win. The Pats have spent all week in San diego getting ready for their game with the Bolts. The Chargers close with Denver Niners and Chefs, with the last two on the road, so they could really use a win against Bill Bel, Brady and the boys. No idea why I have this crazy notion, but I think the Bolts will pull this one out.

The Pack are in Atlanta for Monday Night Football, and Denver is home against the Bill. Both should be fine, but that will about end Buffalo’s slim playoff hopes. Music this week from the Killers who are….simply killer.

    Brady!

He loves California. They have been practicing all week in the Sun. Edelman’s “upper thigh” is healing. Gronk is happy. Like most folks outside New England, you think the Pats will choke.
    ———-
They could, but if they Stop Matthews, and get Old Man Rivers to turn over the ball,
we should preceed to check out at 10-3.

  2. Jim White says:

I’m tuning in to watch the introductory press conference for Jim McElwain as the new coach of the Gators. It’s pretty interesting that the Gators would hire one of the guys who made Tebow cry (when he was offensive coordinator for Alabama in SEC Championship game Tebow’s final year). I think I’m going to like this guy.

I’m also torn on what to cheer for in the ACC Championship game. Do I look for the upset of FSU now or wait for Bama to dismantle them as badly as they did Notre Dame?

Lying sack of shit update, or “discovery” is wonderful

Roger Clemens turned over about 6,000 pages of emails in his endless legal battle with his former trainer, Brian McNamee, who is suing the disgraced pitcher for defamation in a Brooklyn federal court.

The email correspondence is thought to reflect the pitcher’s effort in early 2008 to destroy McNamee’s credibility after McNamee accused Clemens of steroid use. For two years Clemens has refused to share the emails, which include conversations with his agents and public relations gurus.

But after multiple court orders and a federal judge’s warning of sanctions and contempt charges, the evidence finally made its way from Clemens’ Houston attorney Rusty Hardin to the New York offices of McNamee’s chief attorney, Richard Emery.

“They did comply as far as we can tell,” said Emery. “They’re all marked confidential. We’ll go through them and make the appropriate requests to the court so that they can be made public.”

In important Norts Spews, Texas came within 12 points of the Kentucky Wildcats last night losing by 12, 63 – 51. Kentucky as seems to be the norm these days, fell behind early, came back to tie at the half before clamping down the D to start the second half

sfgate has a good article in which Steve Young opines that the best stay-in-the-pocket passer is the best quarterback, as he can find ALL the available play options. He puts Rodgers, Brady, Manning, and possibly Luck in this category. And he begs the currently good running QBs, Griffin and Kaepernick and Wilson, to add this ability and become true superstars. A fun read, reminding us that QB is primarily a mental position and requires uber-tons of slogging preparation to come out on top.

Okay, I tied to get folks interested in the criminal docket report yesterday, to sadly little avail.

Maybe you needed to use better knots.

  7. Peterr says:

The Chefs share a lot of the same “will we make the playoffs?” fear that is in the air in Phoenix. Between the drubbing by the then-winless Rayduhs and the loss last week to the Peytons, folks are not happy about the direction the Chefs are headed.
    .
Speaking of last week, there’s also a fair amount of local anger in KC at King Roger about last week’s game. In the 4th quarter, Denver’s LB Von Miller speared Chefs QB in the back with his helmet on a late hit, and Chefs TE Travis Kelce made a statement of his displeasure by making a loose fist with one hand and moving it back and forth at groin-level, which was caught on the camera that was live during the broadcast. Want to hazard a guess as to which player King Roger fined $11,025 and who got off without even a slap on the wrist?

    • emptywheel says:

Nice thing about being a Kitties fan is we’re already prepped for the collapse though far too many were assuming we’d get in a few weeks ago.

    • Peterr says:

Ease up, counselor. That was a joke about your typing in the first sentence of this post: “I tied to . . .”

      • bmaz says:

Shit! I am dense and didn’t realize, gotta be more specific with aged minds you know! Okay, off to tie that loose end up….

  8. scribe says:

Well, Jameis Winston is not some one-off. He is the epitome of the hairballs coughed up by the slough of boosterism-driven win-at-all-costs depravity that is Major College Football. Football coaches as the most highly-paid employees a state has, judges and prosecutors and cops looking the other way to protect the team, and the wholesale exploitation of the student-athletes. In many ways, plantation slaves got better treatment from Massa’. They weren’t as disposable and would be a capital loss if they were disposed of.
    .
Give me small-college football any time.
    .
As to the prediction above re my Stillers, I sadly agree. The injury loss of Brett Kiesel (DE) for the season was, in all likelihood, a fatal blow to their hopes of going deep into the playoffs, and more likely than not to any chance at the playoffs at all. I’m thinking 8-8 and watching January football from home.
    .
Would like to see the Iggles win. If it were snow instead of rain, they might.
    .
One final thought: “pulled pork nachos”.

      • scribe says:

Maybe Jim White is the King of Pulled Pork and maybe not. But has he ever made pulled pork nachos? I doubt it.

        • Jim White says:

Pretty sure that I have made them. I also buy them several times a year at Gator baseball games. The vendor there has passable pulled pork and terrific citrus chipotle barbecue sauce.

    • Peterr says:

Based on the ruling he handed down in the unionization efforts of the Fighting Journalists, I think Peter Sung Ohr of the NLRB would agree with your assessment of the NCAA.
      .
I certainly do. As I noted when Ohr’s ruling was made,

For a bit of perspective, at the University of Kansas the average compensation for full professors at KU is $118,300, while basketball head coach Bill Self gets $3,865,000 a year in compensation (plus incentives and a lump sum longevity payment if he stays through the whole contract) — almost 33 times higher! There are whole departments with salary budgets smaller than what Self takes home. Self’s not alone — in forty of the fifty states, the highest paid employee in state government is either a football coach or a basketball coach. Don’t tell me this is because we value education so much.

In another oops of Norts spews from around the round ball world, #17 Michigan wolverweenies got kinda upset this afternoon by the awesomeness of New Jersey Institute of Technology, the only “independent” school in D1 basketball by the score of 72 – 70. Poor Michigan had to pay a school to come to Ann Arbor and beat ’em up a bit.

Not quite Chaminade over Ralph Sampson and Virginia but not far off either

  10. JohnT says:

Okay, I tried to get folks interested in the criminal docket report yesterday, to sadly little avail.

I read it. And it was a good read; you taught me some things. I think it’s a good reasoned program. And I hope it’s not a rarity
    .
My NFL team still has a sliver of a chance for the playoffs, but odds are it’s not gonna happen … this year. But at least they play a worse than them … the J-E-T-S. lol

  11. JohnT says:

I hate that there’s no edit (grumble, grumble)

But at least they play a worse team than them

    Or is it they?

  12. Ed Walker says:

The Ducks are fun to watch, which I did for the first time last night. They just wore out the Cats, who were barely able to keep up by mid-way through the second quarter. Mariota is just about perfectly suited to that offense, able to run and throw on the run. The defense was stout: Arizona had no first downs in the second quarter and only 2 in the first half. Oregon looks a bit small on both sides of the ball, but they are sure enough fast.

The college playoffs will be a lot more fun than the pros this year.

  13. Peterr says:

    Headline at ESPN right now:

    How Mizzou Can Hurt SEC
    .
Oregon won big. TCU, too. If Bama gets upset, the SEC may be out of the CFP.

    .
Can you imagine the screaming that would ensue?

  14. Peterr says:

    Green Bay 68, Miami 55

No, that’s not football. That’s Green Bay of the Horizon League, taking down the #15 U of Miami in hoops.

  15. masaccio says:

What we learn from this Alabama team is that depth counts. These guys have a second team that would have a winning season wherever they play, and a third team that might have a winning season. With most college teams, especially teams like Vanderbilt and the Irish, the drop off in talent past the first team is huge. You can see it in the way the seasons go. They start strong, but injuries pile up and pretty soon they just aren’t good enough.

  16. masaccio says:

And speaking of Alabama, it is one of my favorite factoids that Bear Bryant was 0-4 against Notre Dame. My brother saw one of those games, 1980, our biggest win over Bryant, 7-0. He said the fans were the most vicious towards the Irish he had ever seen. He said he was actually afraid he’d get hurt if he cheered at all, with the drunks and the rednecks everywhere.

I’ll just contrast that with the Sugar Bowl 1981, ND against Herschel Walker and a cast of walk-ons, won by the Walkers. We had a great time, the Georgia fans were great fun in the French Quarter the night before.

    • bmaz says:

0-4 against Notre Dame? You should have seen the Bo and Woody record against the Pac when I was growing up.

    • bmaz says:

Klynn, do you have any idea how much I miss you???
      .
And all you want to do is edit my blather and blarney?
      .
Sorry sister, I’ve always had crappy grammar and shit opinions, YOU have to talk to me….and us…..to deal with the same. This is your home, and your forum, return to it. We love even sweater vests! But you knew that.

  17. Klynn says:

Oh bmaz I have been quietly lurking. Since last November our daughter has been ill. She had surgery in March. Was doing better but ended up facing another round of concerns in July. As returns to good heLth and catches up in school…then I’ll ne back joining the research and snark.

    • Peterr says:

If you need an editor, you’re in the right place. Not that we’ve got editors here, but we’ve got plenty of folks who need them. See bmaz @11.
      .
Peace to you, your daughter, and the whole Klynn clan.

      • Klynn says:

Thanks so much I will share your kind thoughts with her and the family…Emptywheel IS the right place…now bmaz knows I am not one for four letter words. Tonight, I just feeling the need to type one.

        Bosa!

        • phred says:

Klynn, I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties of your daughter, I hope with time she enjoys a complete recovery and a healthy life… You and your family have my very best wishes : )
          .
As for uh, the Big HoweverManyItIsTheseDays, I gave up around the 24-0 mark. Ouch.
          .
By the way, fwiw, I’m with EW… I don’t see Brady spewing obscenities on the sidelines at the end of the game two weeks in a row. I think the Patsies will take apart the Bolts to vent a little frustration from last week ; )

  18. Peterr says:

It’s clear that the Sweatervests are trying to make it as hard as possible for the playoff committee to ignore them. 45-0 and it’s still in the 3rd quarter . . .

    • phred says:

What I really want to know is… how far did Wisconsin tumble? That was painful…
      .
And just because I feel the need to say this every year, the NCAA needs playoffs culminating in a real championship.

      • Mauimom says:

Root against ‘Bama, Marcy. There are at least SOME good OSU grads, like my husband, who protested Woody & the administration’s speakers’ ban + went on to be an author [as Congressional staffer] of the Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act & others.

Can’t think of too many ‘Bama ones.

        But . . . I know.

      • dakine01 says:

Fairly easy decision for me. I’ve detested the Sweater Vests going back to Woody’s days while I can at least tolerate the Tide with the SEC and Bear connections

  19. bmaz says:

Say what you will about Johnny Football, but there is no way he could be worse than Hoyer today. Jeebus.

      • scribe says:

        Huge.
        .
The guys calling the game for TV gave a shout-out to Myron Cope, saying he’d be very pleased. Classy. Somewhere, he’s taking a drag on a cig, sipping a drink and smiling. Yoy.

  20. phred says:

So the Cards eek out a win and the Niners get their asses handed to them by…
    .
    Oakland. Ouch.
    .
Maybe you should be less gloomy out there in Phoenix, bmaz…

    • bmaz says:

Naw, the Cards still have major problems. They got a gift call on a fumble recovery that wasn’t a fumble at all. But for that they undoubtedly lose. Not enough offense.

      • Peterr says:

The Chefs fans agree with you 100%, but as I said @8, the “will we make the playoffs?” fear is as thick in the KC air as in Phoenix — and getting thicker. I missed the game, what with stuff at church, but heard the post-game chatter on sports talk radio on the way home.
        .
        It was not pretty.
        .
Lots of Chefs fans rooting for the Patsies tonight.

  21. Klynn says:

Thanks for the kind thoughts re: my daughter. As for EW and the Buckeyes…Geeeez first your guys break our quarter’s ankle and now you cannot even root for your team’s conference representative? Salt in the wound. I root for MI when we are not playing one another.

Ah, it’s snowing in Lambeau, listened to a little Vince Guaraldi earlier… It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas : )

  23. phred says:

Seeing some nice smiles on the Packer sidelines… it must just be the infectious spirit of the holiday season : ) Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

      • Peterr says:

Spoken like someone ensconced in the land of cactii.
        .
Pro tip: If there’s no snow on the ground or in the air, it’s not a beautiful night at Lambeau.

Thanks for sharing a little holiday cheer with me tonight bmaz. Tomorrow will be a very unseasonable day, nice to have a pleasant evening first…

  25. Linnaeus says:

First off: It’s been a while since I’ve stopped by. Hi, everyone.

    Second: Fuck Ohio State.

    Third: The Kitties won!

    • bmaz says:

      Linnaeus!!

Why so scarce? You think we do not notice, but still your absence is noted.
      .
Agreed about the Sweatervests. The national poll/BCS/CFB or whatever they are, never seem to learn what a mistake it is to invite the lame Buckeyes to the party. Then….Poof!
      .
Third: First time ever, I am worried the Kittehs may make a move in the postseason. Good stuff.

  26. bmaz says:

Aaron Rogers has freaking incredible stats. Better than even the Geezer’s. Despite that, after 100 games as a starting quarterback, Rogers has the same record as Favre, 68-32. Both incredible, but edge to Rodgers for the insanely good stats to get there.

    • Peterr says:

The Geezer had the benefit of having a defense for much of his career, particularly during the Holmgren years. Rodgers, not so much. See, for instance, tonight. The Cheese won, but their defense was not exactly a factor.

      • bmaz says:

Baloney. Rodgers’ defenses have not even been close to being lesser than Favre’s. That is about a dew so far. Both have had a few incredible players and both have had mostly okay players, at best, around them. That is not a separator of Cheese Qbs.
