Froomkin Hired by HuffPo

So the WaPo wanted to silence Dan Froomkin. And instead, their stupid decision has led to Dan Froomkin getting hired by an outlet with greater online circulation than the them.

From Glenn Greenwald:

In yet another sign of how online media outlets are strengthening as their older establishment predecessors are struggling to survive, The Huffington Post has hired Dan Froomkin to be its Washington Bureau Chief and regular columnist/blogger.

Fold The Holder Nomination

The meme that has been floated by Glenn Greenwald and several others that Eric Holder’s involvement in the Chiquita matter is just principled, zealous representation of his client akin to the heroic souls that have taken the mantle of defending Gitmo detainees. I admire Glenn Greenwald’s writing and respect his work immensely, but I take pretty big issue with this position. In fact, Eric Holder was closer to a mob consigliere than principled criminal defender.

No

CR has posted the “bailout plan,” as it currently stands.

Glenn Greenwald has an important response, as does gjohnsit over at DKos.

But here’s all you need to know. Hank Paulson is asking for $700,000,000,000. That’s $2,333 from every man, woman, and child in the United States.

In exchange for that money, Paulson is unwilling to accept any demands to make markets more transparent, limit executive compensation, or assist homeowners fighting foreclosure.

The Pre-Emptive Cave on Immunity

Glenn Greenwald catches the Democrats preparing to cave to Administration demands for retroactive immunity for the telecoms.

Mr. McConnell argued on Tuesday that the expanded surveillancepowers granted under the temporary measure should be made permanent.

Healso pushed for a provision that would grant legal immunity to thetelecommunications companies that secretly cooperated with the N.S.A.on the warrantless program.

Security Clearances

I’m sitting here with Kagro X, wating for Glenn Greenwald to interview Anthony Romero. I suspect the FISA bill will be a topic of hot conversation.

Meanwhile, I wanted to point to the “clarification” given by the guy whom Congress wants to give complete power to decide whom to wiretap and whether those wiretap targets are in the US or not.

Data-Mining Three

This is just a quick post to register two disagreements with Glenn Greenwald’s post claiming the NYT’s data-mining story is a shiny object. First, Glenn claims that the stories were floated by “anonymous sources seeking to protect Alberto Gonzales” and “anonymous pro-Bush sources.” But then he goes on to point out that the NYT story (unlike the WaPo story) includes a detail–which I pointed out in my post on the story–that

What IF Iran Is Behind the Burgeoning Regional War?

Via hilzoy via Glenn Greenwald, I found this description of Mubarak’s attempts to broker peace between Hamas and Israel.

“Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak yesterday told the Cairo daily AlAhram that he had drafted an agreement for the release of abductedIsraeli soldier Gilad Shalit, but that it had been scuttled by outsidepressure on Hamas.

Employer Rupert Murdoch Turned Out to Be a More Important Tucker Carlson “Spy” Than the NSA

While it’s not yet clear what specific things Tucker said in the privacy of a Fox News server got him fired, it seems clear that Fox’s review of those statements as part of multiple legal discovery efforts had a more immediate impact on him than the NSA review of his communications with a back channel to Putin.
