TrooperGate Tidbits, While We Wait

It sounds like we're not going to get the TrooperGate report before this evening. So here are some tidbits to keep you busy while we wait.

Either Todd Palin or Walt Monegan Didn't Tell the Truth

Two details of this detailed NYT article on TrooperGate stick out to me (h/t lemondloulou). In this post I'll look at how Walt Monegan's testimony contradicts the First Dude's. Here's what First Dude had to say in his affidavit. I was not aware of the Grimes report until July 2008, after Monegan left the government.

John McCain's Secrets

/

John McCain excuses his campaign's recent, desperate obsession with William Ayers on the claim that Obama hasn't been forthcoming about the relationship with Ayers. But it looks like John McCain--and not Obama--is the one who has been hiding unsavory activities.

An New Kind of Intimidation

It seems that the former partner of Mike DeWine (DeWine is co-Chair of the McCain team in OH) is asking for the voter registration cards of everyone in Greene County, OH, who voted during golden week: Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer and representatives of County Prosecutor Stephen Haller have contacted the local Board of Elections asking for the voter registration cards of everyone who voted during the six-day window, which ended Monday. But

TrooperGate Tomorrow

I wonder if the hate rallies will mind if Steve Branchflower concludes that Sarah Palin and her creepy sidekick "Dude" abused the public trust to pursue a personal agenda? The Alaska Supreme Court today rejected an attempt by a group of six Republican legislators to shut down the Legislature's investigation of Gov.

Meet the Bloggers: Pitchforks and Congressional Hearings

/

I just finished taping tomorrow's edition of Meet the Bloggers, which shows at 1PM ET. John Cusack was on to talk about the DVD release of his movie, War Inc. We talked some about Congressional hearings--both regarding war profiteering and regarding finance companies who use their bailout money to send executives on a boondoggle.

Make Them Own Any Post-Election Violence

/

It strikes me there are McCain supporters who are conveniently ignoring where the campaign has gone in the last week--inciting crowds to attack Obama personally. It's time to make them own this ugly side of their candidate.

Todd's 52-Page Affidavit

/
emptywheel
Someone liberated a copy of the affidavit Todd Palin submitted in TrooperGate. Unfortunately, the AP only wants to report it has the document--it doesn't seem to want to go to the trouble of telling us what's in it.

Vote-Caging by Division of Labor

/
emptywheel
The federal, state, and Macomb county GOP all claim they know nothing about the vote caging using foreclosure lists. Aside from the loopholes in their denials, they issue no denial on the fourth, unmentioned entity involved in alleged attempts at vote-caging: the McCain campaign, which until Saturday was shacking up at a foreclosure lawyer's office.

Treasury Dept. Books AIG's Flight To Carnival!

/
bmaz
The last time the US Government gave AIG a wad of cash infusion, executives of the giant AIG insurance company headed for a week-long retreat at a luxury resort and spa in California. The government just gave them another $38 billion; must be time for Carnival!

McCain's Housing Surge

/

McCain's most consistent policy stand this election is his support for a surge. Last night, he decided to add one more policy stand: a surge for housing.

Brand New McCain

/

John Heilemann suggests that McCain's disintegrating relationship with the press is an important factor in his political failure this fall. Not only does Heilemann ignore two critical factors in this equation: McCain's unpopular ideology and actual voters. But it was Palin's crappy relationship with the press that was key.

Is Our Children Reading?

/

Sarah Palin may "read" the NYT. But I don't think her definition of "read" is the same one that Katie Couric was using.

The Problem Isn't So Much that She's a Tax Cheat...

/
emptywheel
Let's assume the Palins pay thet $6000 in back taxes they owe. Then I'm happy to stop calling them tax cheats. But that doesn't change the underlying scam--that Sarah billed the state so she could cart her children around with her on official trips.

Miers And Bolten Can Kicked Down The Road

/
bmaz
The opinion by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals in the Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten subpoena matter has just been issued. The court has granted the stay requested by the Bush Administration; which, by all appearances, will effectively end the litigation as the subpoenas presumptively expire on January 3, 2009 when the term of the current 110th Congress expires.

McCain's Lawyer Shell Game

/
emptywheel
John Dowd says that the investigation his own partner led--in which he concluded that McCain exercised "bad judgment"--is a smear campaign. Funny, that's what Bennett said about a similar influence peddling scandal last December.

And If His Contrition about Keating Is Fake, then So Is His Sincerity about Reform

/
emptywheel
McCain adds the Keating Scandal to the issues he's flipping and flopping over. I guess that means he's flip-flopping over whether or not he's a maverick.

Debate Prep

/

John McCain claims it's trying to revamp its campaign around tomorrow night's debate. Yet, once again, they seem to have botched the execution, making it more likely the debate will take McCain further down.
