NOT Trash Talk: Watch This Space

Most unsportsy member of the Emptywheel team here, throwing up a placeholder post to catch the sports stuff.

Commenter Lefty665 “seeds the kitty”:

How about them Redskins? Gonna kick some Cheesehead butt. Rogers has all the history, but since the bye Cousins has been the better QB. GM Scott McCloughan has turned the ‘Skins around, Gruden has grown up as coach, and miracle of miracles, Snyder has apparently kept his fingers out of the pie for the first time ever.

Here’s a link to the tune for the day, Patty Loveless doing Darrell Scott’s “You’ll never leave Harlan Alive.”

Have at ’em. Marcy, bmaz, edit this post as you see fit whenever you have a few minutes.

Oh yeah, might be helpful to post this weekend’s NFL playoff game lineup:

Saturday: Pittsburgh Steelers versus Cincinnati Bengals — 8:15 P.M. EST — CBS (free)

Saturday: KC Chiefs versus Houston Texans — 4:15 P.M. EST — ABC/ESPN (free on ABC)

Sunday: Seattle Seahawks versus Minnesota Vikings — 1:05 P.M. EST — NBC (login required)

Sunday: Green Bay Packers versus Washington Redskins — 4:40 P.M. EST — FOX (login required)

Mashable’s posted info about streaming these games. Sucks if you have crappy internet, especially if you’re one of the roughly 30% of Americans without high speed internet access. Given how damned little came out of the FCC’s auction for 700Mhz bandwidth formerly used for analog television broadcast, does it ever feel like the auction was a scam to force the public to pay more to view sports?

UPDATED — 5:30 PM EST —
Head upstairs where bmaz has posted the REAL trash talk tackling the divisional playoffs. I’ve also corrected the lineup to add Kansas City vs Houston *now in progress*, per NFL’s schedule. Wow, so pressure, much football, very relief. /Rayne

Thanks Rayne, I needed that.:) Here’s a quickie to show I’m not completely parochial.
    .
Will the Squawks be frozen out against the Vykes? The forecast for game time is 0 with -10 to -20 wind chill. Marshawn Lynch was smart to be inactive for this game. Fans are advised to bring styrofoam to put under their feet to keep them from freezing. Seasons with a ‘tude are why I never wanted to live in the upper mid-west.

lefty665 — Weather here in the Midwest ensures survival of the fittest — or the most insanely committed to their sport. Mother Nature doesn’t fuck around when she weeds ’em out.

Thank the stars my kids chose sports like golf, soccer, track, and cross country, though the last is a real kick-in-the-ass in November.

A friend married a woman from Fargo via Minneapolis. What I was told was that winter keeps out the riffraff.

You’ve left one game out, oh most unsporty of the Emptywheel team: The Chefs at Houston, at 3:15pm Central on ABC/ESPN.

Everyone’s an ass all the time, just ask bmaz. Anyhow, here’s one for Kansas City, they certainly have the talent to go all the way. And that great QB of theirs, Alex smith, how on Earth could anyone ever have doubted him? Just ’cause he sucked elsewhere, you can forget that. Cousins has never been any good before this year, he won’t last. Rodgers is a flash in the pan, no way he can do well any more. And Texas has who?

      • lefty665 says:

bloopie2 – Cousins was drafted behind Griffin in ’12 and mostly rode the bench behind him in ’12 and ’13. He started about 4 games each in late ’13 and ’14 and was underwhelming. He’s started them all this year and gotten steadily better. Since the bye most of his stats are in the top 5. Interceptions were his early fault, but he’s only thrown 3 in the last 8 games. He broke Jurgensen’s record for most 300 yard games in a season, and Rypien’s for most yards with around 4,200. Don’t think he’s ready for the hall of fame, but he has been playing better than Rogers recently. That could all change tomorrow as he gets his introduction to post season. He’s bright, has a good arm and (unlike Griffin) studies hard. His resulting steady progress makes him look like the real deal, and more than a one year phenom.

Bay State Librul – Wonder if anyone’s got an air pressure vs temperature chart. I hear you guys have some experience with that:)

Arrrrr, what be this not quite trash??
    .
Trash would have posted earlier you raring at the bit lug nuts, but Mrs. bmaz sent me out in the 55º cold to get things at Home Depot. I live to serve you, but she runs this gig here.
    .
    Real Trash has been posted.

    (knock on wood)
    .
I took all the home teams in the NFL.
    .
People are talking about the edge that the Steelers have because Big Ben IS playing, and the fact that Andy Dalton ISN’T. And I’m not impressed w/ AJ McCarron either, but I think the Bengals defense rules this game.
    .
I think defense also is the key to the Texans / Chiefs. I predict JJ Watt will have a huge game. I don’t dislike the Chiefs. I like ALEX Smith, and think he was given a raw deal in SF because he was a horrible fit for their system. And the only time he excelled was under NORV! as OC, then, while Mr Khaki pants was coach. And I love the trivia that the Chiefs haven’t lost since the Royals won the World Series. But I think the Texans Defense will wreak havoc
    .
I like the Vikings. Ok, I AM a homer. But I’ve been ruthless on them when they’ve been bad, and they’re not a Super Bowl team YET, but a lot of their players don’t know that. They need seasoning; they’re young; they need more talent on the offensive line; and a LB to replace Chad Greenway when he retires; and a strong safety who can wrap up on a tackle. But other than that, they ARE an 11-5 team; w/ the best record against the spread in the NFL at 12-3; they are at home and being inexperienced, that isn’t as big a deal, but what is a big deal, is Old Man Winter is making an appearance, and he’s going to be mean and nasty. I know – “Seattle’s defense, and Russell Wilson” – but I think the Vikings defense causes more turnovers in the frigid cold than Seattle’s does (PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Adrian Peterson and Teddy Bridgewater hold on to the ball)
    .
And the last game I think will be all offense. W/ the DC team winning. I just think when all is said and done, that whatever is wrong w/ Rodger’s arm will be the difference. It isn’t going away until he gets proper treatment in the off season
    .
And, since this is sports talk, I also took the Washington Capitols and the Dallas Stars. And in NCAA basketball I took St Mary’s, South Carolina, and Arkansas Little rock. And my bold prediction in b-ball is St Mary’s and South Carolina make it to the Sweet 16
    .
    YMMV

i got bigger problems – greenbay or washington?

i love the redskins. half of my family is going to be gathered together in one of the living rooms in n. virginia tomorrow screaming their heads off everytime the redskins gain a yard.

but then there’s my first love – green bay.

    how to chose?

fortunately i have a brother who was never radicalized by redskin doctrine, never went thru the sun dance, and he’s a greenbay guy, too (except when steelers are involved).

it’s a complicated, dangerous world we live in. peace is hardwon and ever temporary.

Just glad I didn’t have to deal with Mr. bmaz after he ‘froze’ his ‘nads off in 55 degree weather. Mrs. bmaz probably sent him on the Big Box Hardware Store mission to literally cool his jets.

Netflix and chill here while we wait for a winter storm to hit — no football after that unsatisfying KC v Houston game. Watching Mad Max: Fury Road, which has become one of my all-time favorite movies. Nothing like a gritty reminder from determined women in a dystopic world that “We are not things.”

      • bmaz says:

Hey, you have no idea how cold 55º can be! Been shivering all day! You people all cozy in the Big Mitten just don’t know real weather!

        • P J Evans says:

I went out and bought groceries and it wasn’t even 55 in the car after an hour in the sun. (Did it wearing flipflops, too. Shoes are for rain.)

Ditto your comment. Especially the Loveless tune. My all time favorite female singer. Her voice=emptywheel/natsecurity. : )
