Trash Talk: Horny Roses Edition

It’s New Years, and given that there are no PAC-10 teams at the Rose Bowl this year, I’m gonna assume that bmaz is still asleep. So I better get a trash talk up for the college games today, at least, if only to keep scribe quiet.

Though I can’t really tell you what to look for today. I was just practicing the first bars of “On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin” when I realized someone let the Wolvereenies into a New Years Day game. In response to my tweet, “I’m so old I remember when you were expected to have a D to play in a bowl game,” DDay reminded me, “like the Michigan team, Tate Forcier couldn’t get a D either, so he’s ineligible today.” Go Blue!

In addition to the first bars of “On Wisconsin,” I’ve been working on some “Rah! Team! Fight!” for MSU, which faces the Crimson Tide in what actually looks like a real bowl game (I can say that, given that we’re assuming bmaz is not yet awake).

There are some other wacky games today … Northwestern?!?! UConn?!?!? (Speaking of which, congrats to Stanford for finally beating the lady Huskies in hoops.)

And then one more real-looking game: the maybe-finally-but-then-again-maybe-not-retiring JoePa versus the definitely retiring Urban Meyers.

May the Big 10.2 continue to outperform their normal Bowl performance…

Update: Swapped out the Rose Bowl for this YouTube, thanks to the newly liberated David Shuster.

Jeebus, one of your favored teams sneaks into the BCS and you’re still badmouthing it!!!

I’d have liked to see the Stanford-Sconsin game. If only to see some fine trash between Rosalind and Phred. Alas, it’s not gonna happen.

            • phred says:

Ummm, rosalind dear, Badgers are most likely to dig under and uproot a tree than to be smashed by one (what on earth could you be thinking — a lightning strike or something?!?). If so, you’re right, Stanford would need divine intervention to subdue Bucky ; )

On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm…

              • rosalind says:

well you all better have packed these cause a peek out the window shows nothing but blue skies above. that orange glow up there? the sun. may take your team a while to adjust to these foreign conditions.

                pac 10 out
                helloo pac 10+2

                • phred says:

Oooo, I gotta get me some of those ; ) And the musical key chain, too, not that I really require accompaniment when I start humming On Wisconsin ; )

Now that you mention it, I’m surprised WI didn’t ship some chillers out your way to turn some of the rain you (were? are? how’s your weather been lately?) getting into the frosty white stuff for the occasion. TCU would be so distracted by the sight of snowflakes, the Badgers would win in a walk ; )

So what cream puff draw did the Tree get anyway? ; )

                  • rosalind says:

                    rain of biblical proportions.

the teevee gods decreed the bowl de rose shall ever be played under the sun to taunt the snowpocalypse sufferers so we get picture perfect beauty for one day, then tomorrow our rain is scheduled to begin again…

                    • phred says:

I am genuinely sorry to hear it. I hope a bit more dry weather comes your way soon! In the meantime, I am glad you are getting a break, even a short one, from the deluge : )

      • Mauimom says:

I would have participated in that trash, on Stanford’s behalf.

Jeeze, if this idiotic “Bowl Season” doesn’t make the case for the abolition of the “BCS,” I don’t know what would. UConn????? TCU in the Rose Bowl????
No Pac 10 team in the Rose Bowl??

This sucks. I’ll go fairly far down the “quality” pole to watch football, but this set of match-up are beyond my tolerance.

          • Mauimom says:

I’m leaving in an hour or so to go over to a friend’s house to watch both Rose & Fiesta. He’s an OU fan. What a stupid, insulting game.

OMG, Lou Holtz is saying TCU’s gonna whomp WI, in opposition to Mark May’s recounting the Redskins’ [with the “Hogs” as their offensive line] win over the Dolphins.

Mark can barely contain his contempt for Holtz and his foolishness. I keep wishing May would just box his ears.

        • phred says:

Mauimom, alas I thought I knew ye… A Tree fan? Aw c’mon, Bucky is so cute — what’s not to love? ; )

Have fun at your friends house and enjoy the games — nitwit announcers notwithstanding ; )

          • Mauimom says:

I almost went to UW for law school. I’d worked for Dave Obey and been to WI several times during campaigns [admittedly to garden spots like Stevens Point and Wausau]. However, UCLA started a month later [I was in Europe and used that month to go to Scandinavia] and offered “in state” tuition [$525/year][Practice Husband & I had retained our CA residency while working on the Hill].

But hey, as between the Robber Barons & the badgers, I’ll take them barons.

Some years ago, when Stanford dropped the “Indians” as mascot, there was a vote as to what the new mascot should be. “Robber Barons” won, hands down. Of course, the trustees did not go along with this exercise in democracy, and we’re stuck with the wimpy “Cardinal.”

            • phred says:

That’s cool — I knew you had been a Congressional staffer, but I didn’t realize it was on Obey’s staff. Way cool. How did you come to work for him? I always thought members of Congress hired staff from their home state, but perhaps I am confusing that with the page program…

I have to confess, I had not run across the moniker “The Tree” before, so I looked up Stanford’s mascot earlier and found this link which included the following:

There was a move to reinstate the Indian as the school mascot in 1975. The debate was put to vote along with new suggestions: Robber Barons, Sequoias, Trees, Cardinals, Railroaders, Spikes, and Huns. None of the suggestions were accepted.

Funny how they don’t mention the outcome of the vote, or how it came to pass that none of the options were “accepted”. Your description is far more illuminating : )

            • bobschacht says:

The Cardinal? Wimpy? Then how do you explain Cardinal Ratzinger’s running game against the field a few years ago? He could not be stopped! He ran roughshod over all the competition. It is true that there were a lot of infractions, many only lately revealed, but hey, the Cardinal won.

              Bob in AZ

    • phred says:

Bmaz, you and your Pac-10 should be thanking their lucky stars that they found a way to weasel out of playing “83-20” Bucky. I hope the badger has been eating his Wheaties, ’cause he’s gonna have a lot of push-ups to do later today : )

      Happy New Year Everyone!

And EW, glad to see you are out from under your house, but too bad you had to sell it for what you did… Tell the Mr. he needs to beef up the defenses on his fort, maybe he some little green plastic army men would do the trick ; )

  1. klynn says:

Hey, I have an OT question for both of you. We had to buy a new DVD player and went blue ray. A loaded program on the player had a preset zip to 19395 which is Westtown, PA in West Chester County PA.

I have wondering why that zip?

  2. phred says:

Is Ros around today or is she still sleeping off the excesses of last evening? ; ) We have an advantage here as we had plenty of time to sleep in, courtesy of GMT, and still make it up in time for trash collection. Of course, the drawback is that it will make for a late night tonight… Speaking of which, thank heaven for live streaming on-line! Go BADGERS!

And while I am on the subject of excesses, if you ever have the opportunity to spend New Year’s Eve in Reykjavik, do not miss it! The fireworks are amazing : ) The 5 a.m. bar time wasn’t bad either ; )

  3. nomolos says:

I have to interrupt this thread to thank Emptywheel and BMaz for staying on top of so many issues. 2010 was made a lot less painful by being able to read honest evaluations of putrid propaganda from the various government sources/mouthpieces. Thank you both for your wonderful work and may you have a less stressful new year.

  4. randiego says:

    Happy New Year y’all!
Texas Tech is winning their bowl game, so MsDiego is happy.
Can someone explain to me how unranked UConn is in the Fiesta Bowl?

  5. bmaz says:

No Trash Talk is complete without some Favre. Here is a fun fact: Favre started for his high school team, the Hancock North Central baseball team, as an eighth-grader and earned five varsity letters in baseball. Can’t find any evidence of what he sent to cheerleaders during that time…..

  6. bobschacht says:

Before getting into the comments, I can’t resist commenting on a few of EW’s leads:

Michigan gets a bowl game! In view of their season record, since it obviously does not result from merit, must reflect
    (a) the purchasing power and number of Michigan graduates around the country interested in a Michigan game
    (b) interest in whether Michigan’s offense will score more than 40 points
    (c) interest in whether Michigan’s defense can limit the other team to less than 40 points

I also second your mention of the Women’s BB game between the Huskies and the Stanford Cardinal. CondoLEEZa Rice notwithstanding, I’ve been a fan of the Cardinal for years, and had the pleasure of watching all but the opening minute of the game. The Cardinal showed exceptional discipline and resolve, and basically beat the Huskies at their own game.

I’m looking forward to the Wisconsin game (my home state), and the Mighty Ducks.

    • phred says:

Bob, you left the most obvious option off your list…
      4) the powerful motivation of Michigan fans to have an excuse to go someplace warm, the game is kinda beside the point ; )

  7. phred says:

Looks like it is up to Joe Pa to carry the Big 10.2 in the early games. Hopefully the Badgers will rise to the occasion a bit better later on…

  8. radiofreewill says:

Well, it was a close one all the way to the end, but the Gators intercepted the JoPa’s with a minute to go, and rumbled 80 yards for the put-away TD, 37-24.

    • bmaz says:

Nice that the NCAA gods gave Urban Meyer a freebie win in his last bowl game by scheduling him against a Big-10 team; not sure he could have beaten anybody else.

      • radiofreewill says:

You know, after playing golf for years with guys who would regularly react to bad shots by slinging their clubs into the woods, I figured out that my value as a person wasn’t measured by my golf game. It seems that Urban had to drive himself to the brink of a heart attack before he caught on…

I’d love to see the Badgers pull it out against TCU!

Arkansas is ridiculously strong this year, 38-21.

        • phred says:

Thanks rfw, the Badgers need all the help they can get at the moment…

As does ESPN3 whose inadequate servers can’t handle the demand for live streaming today. It’s hung up a bunch of times, but here we are in the 4th quarter, and poof, can’t connect at all. Arggghhhhh….

          Go Badgers!

          • bmaz says:

Badgers just scored making it 21-19 and then went for two and the tie. Pass deflected, no good. Badgers must now try onside kick with only 2 minutes and one timeout left.

TCU recovers onside kick; looking bad for Badgers.

  9. Linnaeus says:

All this anti-Big 10 hate is nearly enough to get me to cheer for Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. Too bad both Auburn and Oregon can’t lose in the BCS championship game.

    • bmaz says:

Again, we are Pac-10 lifers out here, it is only natural. But a Michigan Man cheering for the Buckeyes?? Wow!

And Happy New Year Linnaeus, you need to come around more often!

      • Linnaeus says:

lol @ bmaz….note that I said “almost”. When it gets down to brass tacks, I really can’t cheer for the Buckeyes. It’ll just be painful to deal with SEC braggadocio (even if it is warranted on the merits this year).

Since I have ties to two Pac-10 universities now, I can’t get upset much about ribbing from Pac-10 lifers. I understand that’s the natural order of things.

Happy New Year to you too, bmaz! I do plan on making my visits more frequent in 2011.

        • bmaz says:

I’m afraid all I got was some rain for a couple of days and clear blue sky now. Now I think Bob Schacht up in Flagstaff has some excess snow he would be happy to unload.

          • Petrocelli says:

A group of Canoocks just got back from AZ … complaining how cold it was there, they had to wear Winter Coats at night …

Our White Christmas decided to spend the Holidays in Europe.

            • bmaz says:

It has been unreasonably cold here, even in Phoenix, they were not kidding. I mean the high today is only 50. Brrrrrrrrrr! Beautiful day other than that though.

  10. bobschacht says:

Well, due to time zone confusion, I missed seeing Michigan get blown out by Miss State. EW, was that your hint @47? You don’t think they’ll give him one more year with strict instructions on defensive recruiting?

I’m not surprised at the Miss State scores, but I was hoping for more offense out of Denard & Co.

Meanwhile, the first quarter at the Rose Bowl seemed to indicate a high scoring game, but the defenses dominated the second quarter.

    Bob in AZ

  11. Jim White says:

Sorry to be late to the trash. Jeebus, but the Big 10.2 is totally cursed. I think you have to add in a loss by one of the .2’s: Nebraska beat Washington by 35 in Seattle during the regular season and then lost to them in San Diego for the bowl. The only way to account for that is to realize they are now Big 10.2 and can’t win a bowl.

Look for Arkansas to run up the score on Bucky in the Big Easy, too.

If UConn doesn’t solve Bobby Stoops’ BCS problem, I don’t think anything can.

Oh, and good riddance to Urban. It’s gonna be tough on me, since he was responsible for a lot of Bieber’s upbringing the NFL, but Charlie Weiss could be a pretty good choice by Muschamp. Gonna be lots of fun with him here, he went to the same school here in town where both of my kids have gone. I just hope he brings in a new defensive coordinator, too. Austin has been terrible but has been lobbying in the local paper to keep his job.

And I hear that the folks up on the Plains are already concocting recipes for duck soup…

    • bmaz says:

Don’t fuck with The Duck! Quackers are king, gonna make Auburn their queen! Newton and the five tattoo parlor criminals from Ohio State ought to all be ineligible to play in these bowl games

      • MadDog says:

It wasn’t to be, but my fantasy was for Wisconsin and Oregon to be in the Rose Bowl.

        Cheese and Quackers, doncha know?

    • bmaz says:

Yeah it is total bullshit; if these are the standards, the NCAA ought to give Bush his Heisman back and USC its wins back.
