The Diminishable Returns of MAGAt Mobs
Thom Tillis has made a lukewarm announcement making it clear he would not vote to confirm Eagle Ed Martin to be US Attorney for DC.
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) said he informed the White House that he opposed naming Trump’s interim appointee to a full four-year term.
“If Mr. Martin were being put forth as a U.S. attorney for any district except the district where Jan. 6 happened, the protest happened, I’d probably support him,” Tillis, who is up for reelection next year, told reporters. “But not in this district.”
[snip]
“We have to be very, very clear that what happened on January the 6th was wrong. It was not prompted or created by other people to put those people in trouble. They made a stupid decision, and they disgraced the United States by absolutely destroying the Capitol,” Tillis told reporters. “There were some people that were over-prosecuted, but there were some two or three hundred of them that should have never gotten a pardon, and he [Martin] agreed with that.”
There’s wiggle room here. Tillis suggested he would vote for Martin in some other district — perhaps his native Missouri (where Trump nominated a slate of nutjob judicial appointees yesterday). One of Martin’s little hobbies has been to pester medical journals at RFK Jr’s behest to suggest science is an impermissible bias, and there is no more jurisdiction in DC for such things than in Missouri.
And while Chuck Grassley has made it clear he won’t call Martin up for a vote unless he knows it’ll pass, he has also suggested the nomination might not be dead (Lisa Murkowski is a likely no vote; it’s unclear if there are four no votes if the full Senate got the nomination).
In response the MAGAt mob has done what the MAGAt mob does best: froth and threaten. Some have started conspiracy theories suggesting that Tillis’ opposition stems from something other than the insurrection, such as corrupt real estate deals. Others have called to replace Tillis on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Perhaps the most interesting response is a call to have Lara Trump, who is originally from North Carolina, primary Tillis next year.
It’s never a good idea to underestimate the cowardice of elected Republicans. If Tillis holds out until May 20, thought, Trump either needs to replace Martin (some have suggested he should simply replace Martin with Matt Gaetz, which honestly wouldn’t be a horrible trade — that’s how shitty Martin is), or the judges in the DC District will name someone to serve in the interim.
But if Tillis does hold out, particularly if he holds out in the face of primary threats, it will neutralize a lot of the power of these mobs (some of which, led by Laura Loomer, are increasingly focused on internecine fights).
The MAGAt mob only has power so long as Trump can offer the target something of value. If the response here is to make reelection impossible (or to give Tillis the kind of distance from Trump that might be useful in a swing state), then the target in question would be liberated to act on conscience. For example, Tillis could start to honor the needs of the many service members in North Carolina rather than carry water for Trump’s disastrous Secretary of Defense.
It’s still far too early to declare Martin’s nomination to be dead. But one way or another, Tillis’ public opposition to Martin may create space in the Senate that thus far doesn’t exist.
Yes, there’s a lot of wiggle room here, but this part of it is damned direct: “We have to be very, very clear that what happened on January the 6th was wrong.”
Beyond explaining his opposition to Martin’s nomination, what Tillis is very, very clearly saying (albeit between the lines) is that Trump’s pardon of the J6ers was also wrong.
Trump doesn’t care about Martin’s nomination nearly as much as he cares about himself and his image as being infallible. Tillis isn’t just saying Trump made a mistake about a single nomination, but a mistake about issuing hundreds of presidential pardons.
That will leave a mark. Even if Martin gets through, Trump will be seeking revenge against Tillis.
Thanks for clarifying that point
When I saw your mention of Trump nominating Gaetz to replace Martin, my immediate reaction was “why not nominate Rubio?” /s, but there are still several jobs that Rubio doesn’t have yet …
Collins is a “No” if there are two other “No”s and is a “Yes” if she can be the 51st Yes, as per usual. Ron Johnson is a “Yes” and he’s the only Republican running in a tight Senate race without a primary threat as the principle concern.
Ron Johnson isn’t up for re-election now- 2028
CNN is saying martin is out and trump is going to name a replacement.

That sounds just like The Felon Guy.
Which means it’s going to be someone who’s really bad.
Raise a glass to Fox News Judge Jeanne Pirro.

Tillis’ statement is the very definition of “ethical vacuity:” if Martin is unqualified by dent of his participation and support of what Tillis considers a “wrong” against the US govt, then how is he qualified for any other post — whatsoever — in any US govt position?
Not that it’s surprising, not in the least: profound intellectual dishonesty is the proud hallmark of the 21st Century GOP.
Oh thank you sweet baby Jesus on a unicycle!
I was working on a post about Martin and the horrible impact he would have on District law enforcement. I actually sent snail mail rather than calling Capito’s and Babydog’s office over Martin’s nomination even though they are ruby red MAGAts.
Midway through writing I decided to check the news on his nomination…just hoping.
I have never been so happy to bin a post.
But thank you Dr. Wheeler for your write up on his nomination and drawing attention to what a menace Eagle Ed is. I pity the landing spot he ends up at.
Sorry…New Pope O/T.
I’ve just read that BANNON is apoplectic today.
And, if so, THAT is a GOOD thing.
Yes, harpie. fortunately, a chicagoan, midwestern catholic. and a math degree from villanova.
dual citizenship, US & Peru.
Pretty sure I’m two degrees of separation from Prevost. My dad was an Augustinian at Villanova (obviously decades before Prevost), but my father’s closest friend from the seminary (and my mom’s diss advisor) remained at Villanova/CU throughout, afaik.
Note Prevost did not offer a greeting in English.
I think I met him years ago at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
And there was no way he was going to offer greetings in English. The bulk of his work was in Peru and Rome, and he was clearly seen as “American” in the sense of both South and North America.

I’ll try to put something together tonight, as I have a busy day this afternoon.

“I have a busy day this afternoon.”
Time flies when you’re having fun.
Marcy, you may have no time for reading other than the stuff you are analyzing but there is a book by Amir Alexander titled Infinitesimal that might give you fond memories of your father. It is a story about the Jesuits refusal to accept calculus at the time of its development and the consequent effect of that non-acceptance on Italy’s loss of scientific standing in the world. Perhaps a lesson for our times.
Ed Walker would truly enjoy the book also.
Missionary in Peru for lots of years. Obvs fluent in Spanish. Apparently Franky wanted him more than Yet Another Italian.
There’s a lot of discussion on Bluesky about his Twitter/X postings.

Scrolling down that thread there’s a tweet by Cardinal Cupich that Prevost retweeted, blasting Trump 1.0’s family separation horrors.
My Catholic sibs have an ongoing text thread between the 8 of us and it was very active yesterday. My sis who was a Catholic Worker back in the day (and who hasn’t lost the fire) was very happy, saying Prevost was the next best choice to Cupich.
Her other comment about Prevost, whom she’s observed firsthand but doesn’t know personally, is that he’s a strong reformer, but lacks people skills. She said he’s “spectrum-y,” a comment that reflects her knowledge of the subject as a child-development specialist and mother of an astrophysicist who is very much “on the spectrum.” I wouldn’t be surprised if Cupich gets a spokesperson role in his papacy.
WOKE MARXIST POPE

I apologize, Marcy…and now I will stop.
Henry VIII set a great example for these sad people. They should take their right-wing bishops and start their own Catholic Church of the United States, perhaps with Pope Donald I.
Can’t resist to add another comment to this OT thread: They (= “these sad people”) have already a Leo amongst them (even a double one if his first name Leonard is added).
But I agree with you, Ed: This Leo wouldn’t be pope-able as long as the Donald is around.
There are breakaway groups of Episcopalians for Conservatives when that Church got too “woke.” The Continuing Anglican movement and the Anglican Church in North America are two of them. I believe Fred Barnes and Michael Gerson are two followers.
Amen to that (;
Sadly (?), what first comes to mind when I think of an American pope is that famous memento of a papal visit to the US, Pope-on-a-Rope.
But it’s good. I am old enough to remember the Mass being said in Latin, by a priest facing away from the congregation. I had to follow along in a dual language missal, to know what was going on. That’s no way to instill faith in your flock.
i loved the dual language missal. Reading along gave me an early appreciation for the Latin roots of English. It gave me something to think about other than the boring sermons.
It didn’t help that the church never seemed to have much interest in publicly challenging the “back to the audience all impersonal” narrative with the “I’m on the same journey as all of you, follow me as we move forward together” narrative that was (one of) the original intention.
It was run by conservatives most of the time. They didn’t approve of democracy before John XXIII. (I think some of them after him didn’t approve of it, either.)
The first words the new Pope spoke in his address from the balcony were “Peace be with you all!”
It shouldn’t be lost that this happened on the very day of the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe, the day when the murderous Nazi regime was defeated, and there was a world-wide hope for peace.
ABC claims that The Felon Guy is now considering Jeannine Pirro for the spot that Martin was dropped from.

Well at least whiskey pete will have a drinking buddy now.
Drawing from the hallowed list of movie/TV personalities who have assumed political office in my lifetime. In chronological order: George Murphy, Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, Sean Duffy, and now Jeannine Pirro??? Am I missing anyone? Sports stars don’t count, so I didn’t include Bill Bradley…
Shirley Temple was Ambassador to Ghana and later to Czechoslovakia. She was also U. S. Chief of Protocol. The current nominee for that position is Monica Elizabeth Crowley who has some history with Fox. But I think there may be some bumps in the road on her path ahead.
Forgot about Shirley. Also Al Franken.
Jesse Ventura! A governor!
That’s entertainment star not sports star.
My first though is this has to be a joke but, if it keeps the pederast Gaetz from the job, what the hell, why not. It’s not like he was ever going to pick someone competent. I’m surprised he hasn’t appointed someone from Fox weather to NOAA yet.
Fox’s loss is…well, ours, too.
And now he’s fired the Librarian of Congress. By e-mail. from the WH personnel office. Disrepectfully, at that.
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2025/5/8/2321337/-Trump-has-fired-Librarian-of-Congress-Dr-Carla-Hayden
(I’m hoping that the Kosmos satellite that’s coming back will land on him during a meeting with his cabinet and enablers.)
Isn’t firing without cause (let alone prior notice) illegal in cases where the nomination has to be confirmed by the Senate? Carla Hayden had a 74-18 vote according to the AP article linked to the dailykos article.
Inflicting public humiliation on the undeserving is the closest thing to sex Trump enjoys these days.
Rimshot!
Although it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Loomer is providing that service for him now…
I’m sure Melania is more than willing to farm-out that chore to Laura.
I regard being fired by Trump as a badge of honor.
Jeanine Pirro’s Fox producer thought she was “nuts.” Trump just named her DC’s top prosecutor. Pirro is a diehard Trump sycophant who thinks the DOJ should serve his interests and punish his enemies https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/jeanine-pirros-fox-producer-thought-she-was-nuts-trump-just-named-her-dcs-top-prosecutor
