Chuck Grassley Complains that DOJ Investigated Why TPUSA Sent 80 Busses to a Riot
During the Kash Patel hearing yesterday, Chuck Grassley threw a bunch of new documents out to create a distraction: New informant reports targeting Hunter Biden, several documents he already declassified, and what has been taken to be a single document about the Jack Smith investigation.
He did so, presumably, to point to this entry noting that Jack Smith collected information affecting Turning Point USA — Charlie Kirk’s organization.
I think the item, a subpoena, may not be what it appears. It appears the subpoena itself was served on Event Strategies, the entity which produced January 6, not TPUSA itself. I’m fairly certain that the investigation into the 80 busses TPUSA paid for was investigated earlier, in the first year of the investigation, along with a bunch of other entities that sent busses.
What’s more interesting is it appears that these are two separate documents (indeed, Grassley’s press release refers to “documents”). The most obvious sign of that is that the first page, described as a summary, is dated 1/23/2023. Whereas the other five pages — which appear to match the title of the document, Arctic Frost Bank Record Subpoenas — show subpoena returns with dates long after the date of the summary, going through a subpoena pertaining to Jeffrey Clark and John Eastman to Fidelity completed on July 6, 2023. [Note: The release of this document exposes the banks of dozens of Trump associates, a fairly alarming privacy violation.]
The five pages of subpoenas focus on several topics, largely the following:
- J6 $
- Wire fraud
- Misappropriation
- Payments to lawyers
- Bogus investigations
- Obstruction
- Credit reports
Most of this traces several prongs of investigation that were publicly reported at the time — largely picking up efforts of the January 6 Committee — showing that Trump raised money in the guise of election integrity, but then paid it to people like Brad Parscale or Dan Scavino.
Based on dates, this appears to be a key focus of Jack Smith once he was appointed. This was one prong of the investigation I had hoped would be — but was not — in Jack Smith’s final report.
But it’s barely reflected in the summary dated January 23, 2023.* There’s one line of effort, “Financial Fraud: Allegations of false/misleading representation to raise money post-election.” There’s one possible crime, 18 USC 15343, that might be the applicable crime (or, given that it accompanies 18 USC 371, the charge ultimately focused on the fake electors). But there’s no sign of any campaign finance crimes.
And it’s not entirely clear that the summary is complete. After all, there’s one crime — 18 USC 241, Conspiracy against Rights — ultimately charged against Trump that doesn’t appear at all.
And whether there are more pages to this summary or not, it’s a dated summary. The investigation continued at least six months after that summary, and (given that details from Mike Roman’s phone only appeared in later filings), probably more.
Chuck Grassley and Kash Patel seem to have released a distraction, one targeted to exploit the Charlie Kirk murder, rather than the most informative document it could have.
* A word about timing. DOJ convened a dedicated grand jury on January 31, 2022. The summary is an FBI document, which starts from April 2022, reflecting the delay described in this famous WaPo story. I suspect that the summary reflects only things that happened after April 2022, because known investigative steps — such as those targeting Sidney Powell in September 2021 — don’t appear in it.
I realize Chuck ‘Red Herring’ Grassley likes playing footies with Kash, but he better start paying more attention to rural farm bankruptcies in Iowa (up nearly 70% from last year). At the very least, he better start teeing up some of that sweet, sweet socialism so they can make it through the year.
That would require him to get staffers who aren’t RW plants.
(A post at DKos about the shooter’s alleged notes to his roommate got comments, one of which dismissed it as “this is the left’s latest gambit.” And someone *defended* that commenter as having been around for a long time.
To me, this is like defending Grassley or DiFi or some other congresscritter saying something bad because they have seniority. Seniority doesn’t excuse bigotry.)
I don’t think Grassley cares about his constituents, nor do they worry about the consequences of voting. Unfortunately, its been proven over and over these people will vote against their own self interests time and time again. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ to the farmers, when big Ag pays politicians more money than the voters.
My family has farmers in middle America and despite all of the very apparent crazy coruption, they are so tuned into a different information stream that has truly indoctrinated them. They are still blaming Biden. It is insanity.
I was hopeful last year, they would see light and those hopes were dashed.
Maybe now that Trump is splashing his own name on all those signs denoting projects funded by (Biden’s) IRA–in addition to helpfully painting over the backgrounds in red–this stolen credit will also result in some blame?
SecTres Soctt Bessent owns thousands of farm acres (Burleigh, Kidder, Eddy, Benson, and Wells counties) in North Dakota. Most of the farmers in that area grow soybeans for China, who no longer want their crop. I wonder what Bessent and Trump’s relationship is like these days.
Zero sales of soybeans to China for the 2025-26 sales year. ZERO.
https://www.reuters.com/world/china/us-misses-out-billions-dollars-china-soybean-sales-midway-through-peak-season-2025-09-10/
I don’t know diddly about ag import/export shit, but this sure seems to me like a very big win for Brazil (as well as a further unsolicited leg-up for China following the cancellation of USAID, which gave them a full, unobstructed run at global soft power hegemony). Here’s a good background piece on the subject from 4 months ago:
https://soygrowers.com/news-releases/how-does-u-s-soybean-production-compare-to-brazil/
That piece describes how the drought of 2112-13 dethroned the US as China’s main soybean importer, but it doesn’t explain why that trend accelerated during Trump’s first term (see the graph about 1/4 the way down the page). The piece also describes Brazil’s prospects for increasing their soy acreage (which expansion China has been facilitating for over a decade), pointing to ~70 million acres of spent pastureland that can be upgraded for soy (likely the Chinese will facilitate that asap). The US currently has about 85 million acres of soy plantings, so that would kneecap US soy farmers next year (especially after this year’s crop being shunned by China for the rest of this season).
And this is right on the heels of Balsinaro’s conviction! Talk about the tarrifs being a smart move on Trump’s part! ~
Trump has a formidable stack of bad qualities, but his rank stupidity is vying for the top of that shit-pile wafting across the globe.
I would guess Bessent, his lawyers and accountants will easily make money on their “loss” and that, in any case, Bessent’s income is now largely independent of such low-return efforts as farming. Why would he care about farmers? They might vote for people like him but they aren’t people like him.
Owning a farm and being a farmer are two very different things. Bessent is no farmer.
Uncle was a farmer. He had one good year, out of about 20. You either are a subsistence farmer, or you’re growing under contract with a corporation, with the banks expecting you to make a profit.
“New informant reports targeting Hunter Biden”?
Got my attention.
So, ahead of the Tuesday hearing, Grassley leaked the new 1023 informant documents to the NY Post, while leaking the Arctic Frost documents to Catherine Herridge, a double assault propaganda blitz.
https://web.archive.org/web/20250916132007/https://nypost.com/2025/09/16/us-news/new-fbi-files-released-by-sen-chuck-grassley-show-more-biden-bribery-allegations/
March 2017: Smirnov interview, not mentioning a bribe, barely mentions Hunter, and needle-in-a-haystacks it’s way to Brady
June 2017:
Feb 2019 file: CIA officers allegedly met with Lutsenko and said Zlochevsky is protected, Zlochevsky pays $3 million to get back into Ukraine from exile
Other allegations, and I haven’t looked through the released forms yet.
The article does mention that Smirnov was sentenced to 6 years for tax crimes and lying about the bribe allegations. The article mentions that Trump’s DOJ is reviewing this case to see if it was properly prosecuted.
The kicker is that despite the confessed lie, Grassley is still demanding that FBI investigate Smirnov’s claims.
I should also add. Neither the NY Post propaganda article, nor Grassley, mentioned that at Smirnov’s sentencing hearing on January 8, Smirnov’s lawyer and the judge both made statements confirming that Smirnov is an Israeli spy, refusing to disclose the specific agency. So, a double agent, in the US acting as an FBI informant.
Nor did they mention that details and dates from the tax indictment are coincidentally lined up around the Brady side channel dates, suggesting a payoff occurred for lying to Brady.
Terrific catch—yet again, by you. I had missed that—it should preface every news article honest reporters put out, “self-confessed Israeli spy.” Omitting that context is misleading. IMO
I was listening to the Patel hearing on C-SPAN2 when it was abruptly ended and I had to download the new video app to watch the rest. Thanks for the TPUSA take on this release as my Representative, Harriet Hagemen, seems to be tied into that messaging.
Did you see where Eric Swalwell asked Patel if he told Pam Bondi that Trump’s name was in the Epstein files?
Kash is so unbelievably unfit for his job. This is America’s top FBI man??
A clip from Scott MacFarlane on x that is also on digbysblog.net
shows the exchange.
https://x.com/MacFarlaneNews/status/1968343223228838178
It was interesting timing to take that meeting off C-SPAN and I wondered whether that was pre-planned or not? Anyway, I did get to hear Swalwell’s questioning and he got Kash to admit that he told Bondi that Trump was in the files. Plain as day. Kash also threw Alex Acosta under the bus as well, which throws Trump under the bus.
We shall see if TV Trump reviews the day’s events after his England trip. To me it seemed like the House questioning did more damage to Kash than the Senate?
I wonder how the Catholics Wray and Barr feel about being crucified for their anti-Catholic bias? I would argue this is good messaging because the Catholics writ large are over represented on the SCOTUS and everyone knows it.
“RMVE [racially and ethnically-motivated violent extremism] in RTCs [“radical-traditional Catholicism”] is likely to increase . . . .”
https://itsyourgov.org/investigation/oversight-project-submits-criminal-referral-against-former-fbi-director-christopher-wray-for-alleged-violations-including-lying-to-congress-and-obstruction/
I have to wonder if the FBI will be looking at the Anti-Fascist leanings of the rapid unscheduled disassembly (RUT) of the LDS church?
If anyone can find a link to the first 8 minutes of the video where Charlie discusses the Mormon church, I would like to review it? The NYT reported on it but the video is lacking; however, I found a person that reported on it and it is far “worse” than I thought. If I was a Prophet at the LDS church, I would be a little ambivalent about the loss of Mr. Kirk. “Worse” in the respect that Charlie used the Bible to “prove” Jesus rose from the dead. Sorry but when a christian apologist uses a letter from Saul err Paul (1 Corinthians 15:6 ) to prove something as fact, there are people that know he is speaking falsely and far more LDSers can discern that fact than any Catholic I have ever met.

Reporter about the Kirk killing: …how are you holding up, sir?
Trump: I think very good, and over there you see all the trucks and they started the construction of the new [ballpark] for the White House which is something they’ve been trying to get for the last 150 years,…
Yes—it was this, Kimmel showing exactly how much he actually cared about Kirk—absolutely eviscerating trump—that infuriated trump. He can’t stand being mocked.
Your framing is exactly what the MAGA framing is: that Kimmel focused on Kirk in that single sentence he uttered (that didn’t even elicit an audience reaction at the time). Here’s what he actually said:
Here’s a good Axios column that covers the other things he said about Kirk’s murder, including his own family’s condolences to Kirk’s wife and kids.
https://www.axios.com/2025/09/18/what-jimmy-kimmel-said-charlie-kirk-killing
Kimmel in his monologue was dissing very specifically the unhinged MAGA response that failed to even notice that the shooter was a Mormon who grew up in that reddest and gun-lovingest of environments, whereas his comments about the murder itself have all been compassionate and showing disgust for the murder and its effect on our national discourse, not for the victim.
Trump, as is his wont, dove right into the “Kimmel disparaged Kirk” theme, as have all of the MAGA commentaries I’ve seen. It’s an outright lie, and I think Kimmel will be pushing back after he gets his legal team assembled.

Fucking pack of liars.
If Grassley’s goal was to release the right-wing media distraction hounds, it appears to have worked all too well. A simple Google search on “FBI Arctic Frost” produces a slew of media posts from the last few days, many referencing the Charlie Kirk affair and likely using its currency as a public-attention hook.
A secondary outcome is to swing right-wing ire back toward the post-J6 investigations of the Capitol riot and Trump’s election overturn attempt, with a new round of accusations about how “Biden’s” DOJ supposedly used them to target Republicans for political purposes.
Yes, we are still living in the upside-down world and it’s still spinning, round and round we go.
Quelle surprise. Erika Kirk made CEO of Turning Point USA.
MAGAffirmative Action.
Sinclair demands that Kimmel both apologize AND contribute money to TPA as a condition for allowing Kimmel back on-air. Uh-huh.

Thank you, EW, for the link to the Arctic Frost documents – incredibly intriguing. One of the J6 players who intrigues me the most is Mark Meadows – who was very near the core of J6 from inception to cover up and he effectively slipped away with no consequences! I don’t even know that he had to spend much on lawyering, did he? Trump paid for some of that, as I understand. Meadows also had that nasty revelation he may have voted in two states in 2020. Now, Meadows has dropped off the face of the Earth and you hear NOTHING of him. Yet, he may have been at the nexus of a lot of nodes of connections leading up to the J6 attacks. Very strange…
