Reid and Republicans Tee Up Another PATRIOT Extension

This is the disrespect in which our Congress holds our Constitution: they will continue to chip away at the Fourth Amendment, by passing yet another extension of the PATRIOT Act without addressing the clear abuses identified since the last extension.

US Congress leaders have agreed to extend for four years an array of counter-terrorism surveillance and search powers adopted after the September 11, 2001 attacks, sources said Thursday.Under the arrangement, the Senate and House of Representatives will hold a vote on extending the controversial powers at the core of the Patriot Act before they lapse on May 27, according to several congressional aides.

The officials said the vote would be “a clean extension” to June 1, 2015, meaning it would not include new civil liberties safeguards sought by some senior lawmakers of both major parties.

Apparently, it’s just too much work to do their fucking jobs and deal with the sound reform proposals on the table.

The ACLU is trying to get a barrage of contacts to legislators.

But if your legislator is either a real liberal or a TeaPartier, please contact them one way or another.

    Two initial thoughts

I was just looking for videos for a post I was going to do on the extensions before I even knew they were going to pull this

Last week we got word of the Reps we were supposed to contact, although my Rep (Lungren) wasn’t on it, but I’m going to contact him anyway

The key sentence from a link in DDay’s post

The idea is to pass the extension with as little debate as possible to avoid a protracted and familiar argument over the expanded power the law gives to the government.

no doubt it is entirely obvious to all now,

    but just in case,

these days, the white house tells senator reid and speaker pelosi what to do and they jump to do it.

who says democrats don’t have republican-style party discipline!

the key point is – all democratic legislation and legislative direction comes from the whitehouse.

i make this point just so we all recognize where responsibility lies in the unlikely event of future damage from democratic- sponsored legislation.

Say what? They are doing their job; the Democrass, by showing that they cannot be labeled as (gaaasp!) weak (can you feeeeel the scorn dripping from those Reichpubliscums?) and the Repugnicrats, by continuing with their Meister Plan of redefining this Republic as the Fruited One, a.k.a. Banana flavor galore from Maine to California Baby….Oh Yeah!!!

    USA! USA! USA!

It would be nice to see some of those tea partiers who talk about getting the government off our backs live up to their words here.
