Trump’s Deep State Can’t Even Deep State Competently
I was and still intend to write a post arguing that all of the coverage of this comment from Trump is wrong. As I rant on Nicole Sandler’s show today, what we saw in these few moments was Trump, whose super power is in being able to command attention, not only failing that, but flubbing his lines when he tried to reassert his command over attention focused on Jeffrey Epstein.
The conspiracy theorists who put Trump in office will not let him take ahold of this conspiracy.
What we see in this exchange is — more than at any time in the last ten years, I argue — Trump’s super power of commanding where people focus their attention failing him.
So I want to write about how everyone is getting this wrong.
But first, I want to talk about how Trump’s Deep State can’t even Deep State competently.
Trump’s attempt to tamp this down, predictably, had the opposite effect, both because infighting over who fucked up the incompetent attempt to tamp it down, and the conspiracy theories that have arisen in the void.
Conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer is at the pivot of both worlds, and she’s playing her part to perfection. She started things today by revealing that Dan Bongino — who actually doesn’t like how hard he has to work at FBI anyway — complaining about how the memo that attempted but failed to tamp all this down happened.
That led Todd Blanche, fresh off his efforts to make the Erez Reuveni disclosures worse, to weigh in, claiming there was no dispute about how to release the Epstein memo.
Meanwhile, Marc Caputo — who has close ties with Susie Wiles from way back — debunks Blanche’s claim of harmony, describing that Wiles and Taylor Budowich witnessed anything but.
The intrigue: MAGA influencer Laura Loomer, a Bondi critic, first reported Friday on X that Bongino left work and that he and Patel were “furious” with the way Bondi had handled the case.
- Some Trump advisers have criticized Bondi, but Trump “loves Pam and thinks she’s great,” a senior White House official said.
- Those witnessing the Wednesday clash between Bondi and Bongino in the White House were Patel, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich.
The more important part of Caputo’s report, though, is that insiders blame Bongino for the “missing minute,” which provided the nutters reason to doubt the entire effort to tamp all this down.
Zoom in: At the center of the argument: a surveillance video from outside Epstein’s cell that the administration released, saying it was proof no one had entered the room before he killed himself.
- The 10-hour video had what has widely been called a “missing minute,” fueling conspiracy theories in MAGA’s online world about a cover-up involving Epstein’s death.
- The “missing minute,” authorities say, stemmed from an old surveillance recording system that goes down each day at midnight to reset and record anew. It takes a minute for that process to occur, which effectively means that 60 seconds of every day aren’t recorded.
- Bongino — who had pushed Epstein conspiracy theories as a MAGA-friendly podcast host before President Trump appointed him to help lead the FBI — had found the video and touted it publicly and privately as proof that Epstein hadn’t been murdered.
That conclusion — shared by FBI Director Kash Patel, another conspiracy theorist-turned-insider — angered many in Trump’s MAGA base, criticism that increased after Axios first reported the release of the video and a related memo.
- After the video’s “missing minute” was discovered, Bongino was blamed internally for the oversight, according to three sources.
Only, complaints about the video are only going to get worse. Wired describes that the metadata shows the video has been altered.
The “raw” file shows clear signs of having been processed using an Adobe product, most likely Premiere, based on metadata that specifically references file extensions used by the video editing software. According to experts, Adobe software, including Premiere and Photoshop, leaves traces in exported files, often embedding metadata that logs which assets were used and what actions were taken during editing. In this case, the metadata indicates the file was saved at least four times over a 23-minute span on May 23, 2025, by a Windows user account called “MJCOLE~1.” The metadata does not show whether the footage was modified before each time it was saved.
The embedded data suggest the video is not a continuous, unaltered export from a surveillance system, but a composite assembled from at least two separate MP4 files. The metadata includes references to Premiere project files and two specific source clips—2025-05-22 21-12-48.mp4 and 2025-05-22 16-35-21.mp4. These entries appear under a metadata section labeled “Ingredients,” part of Adobe’s internal schema for tracking source material used in edited exports. The metadata does not make clear where in the video the two clips were spliced together.
Hany Farid, a professor at UC Berkeley whose research focuses on digital forensics and misinformation, reviewed the metadata at WIRED’s request. Farid is a recognized expert in the analysis of digital images and the detection of manipulated media, including deepfakes. He has testified in numerous court cases involving digital evidence.
Farid says the metadata raises immediate concerns about chain of custody—the documented handling of digital evidence from collection to presentation in a courtroom. Just like physical evidence, he explains, digital evidence must be handled in a way that preserves its integrity; metadata, while not always precise, can provide important clues about whether that integrity has been compromised.
“If a lawyer brought me this file and asked if it was suitable for court, I’d say no. Go back to the source. Do it right,” Farid says. “Do a direct export from the original system—no monkey business.”
Farid points to another anomaly: The video’s aspect ratio shifts noticeably at several points. “Why am I suddenly seeing a different aspect ratio?” he asks.
It is abundantly likely that all of this is easily explained. I noted in my first post that the missing minute probably comes from MCC’s ancient surveillance equipment. And it sounds like someone packaged this up for Bongino.
Of course, none of that is going to matter if and when people confirm that the video doesn’t even show Epstein’s cell, as multiple people claim.
Every single wrinkle will only serve to feed the conspiracy theorists whose attention Trump cannot manage to command.
Here’s the thing, though. I think Bondi probably did shut down these investigations because they are inconvenient to Trump. Maybe it stems from nothing more than Trump’s demand to command attention; maybe it has to do with the known connections between Trump and the abuser looking damning no matter how close or far Trump is to the rape.
But because the Deputy Director of the FBI, an agency with thousands of people with expertise on this kind of thing, couldn’t manage to find someone who could hold his hand and explain basic things like chain of custody, they have all made it far, far worse.
Trump’s Deep State can’t even Deep State competently.
Update: The date of the saved video (May 23) was between the date when Bongino and Kash told Bartiromo that Epstein killed himself and the date when Bongino told Fox the FBI was going to release the video but first was, “taking time to clean up and enhance the video.”
Pam Bondi was attorney general in Florida 2011 to 2019. During some of Epstein’s depredations. She didn’t charge general him.
I live in FL and one of the first times Pam B. got in the newspapers, it was for not returning rescue dogs to Hurricane Katrina victims who has lost and later wanted their dogs back. Pam wouldn’t return them at first until the stories make her look cruel and nasty in public.
I met somebody who worked in her office and we became friends. I once asked “So what’s up with Pam?” The answer: “The worst kept secret in her office is that everybody thinks she’s a moron. I mean, literally an idiot. Every single person who works for her says the same thing.”
Pam Bondi is actually smart and street smart. She knows the law, that’s how she can bend it Trump’s way, with a lot of assists from a corrupt supermajority on the Supreme Court. It’s just that her ideology and politics always trump the law.
If Bondi was smart she wouldn’t have started all this by loudly proclaiming she had the mythical Epstein Files on her desk while making a public display of releasing them; just for it to turn out to be the old stuff that had already been released because she wasn’t really familiar with it.
She should have said Biden & the Deep State destroyed it all or…just be honest and say from the start that there are no other files and we know the truth. The crazies still wouldn’t have believed, but at least they wouldn’t have gotten their hopes up that one of their conspiracies would finally turn out to be true.
This is all her fault. I correctly identified that mistake as soon as she made it. They’ve only made things worse because they’ve never been on the wrong side of the MAGA crazies before and don’t know how they dig through every detail like methed-up foxhounds who think every hole has a fox in it. The only way to avoid the crazies come is to never give even the slightest hint that their conspiracies could be real. As soon as they get your scent they don’t stop until your corpse has been ripped to shreds. Like how they deciphered Kash Patel’s and Bongino’s insistence that Epstein killed himself as lies because they were obviously embarrassed admitting it on TV after having promoted the conspiracies themselves.
And without a doubt, if Hillary had won in 2016 and libs had a 6-3 majority on the court right now, Trump would get curbstomped in every case. But…he’d likely be in prison right now if the court hadn’t saved him from his criminal trials. Just because righties win by abusing their power doesn’t make them smart. It’s easy to win if you cheat.
“Just like physical evidence, he explains, digital evidence must be handled in a way that preserves its integrity…”. That sort of insight would’ve been useful in articles written about Hunter Biden’s “laptop”.
1. Bondi got to be AG by winning the GOP primary, which she won by being constantly on Fox News as a blond mean girl.
2. My guess is that any new documents have the same information and names but include Trump in them. Nothing incriminating but not what she or Trump want released.
3. What I don’t understand is that Epstein made his money from the rich and powerful, who “invested” their money in his “investment business.” As greedy and as lecherous as Trump is, why didn’t Epstein ensnare him? Trump’s personality seems like a ripe target. The only reason I can think of is that Trump’s high profile affairs and divorces would create a danger but apparently not enough that they didn’t pal around on camera a lot.
Trump and Epstein were familiar with settlements including Non-Disclosure Agreements.
Bondi made the Trump U issue go away in Flori-duh by “being unaware” of the case and never opening a complaint file of the case. She was rewarded with a $25m campaign donation from the Trump Foundation.
https://www.newsweek.com/trump-donate-25000-dollars-new-ag-pick-pam-bondi-1990559
…and further rewarded the USAG position for her loyalty to Trump.
America truly is the land of opportunity.
Where else could a crazy conspiracy theorist go from getting kicked out of Uber for hating Muslims, cry publicly about, then a few years later have the away to walk into the White House to affect NSC staffing and have the sources and methods to develop the inside baseball on DOJ-FBI leadership infighting?
Pam Bondi is no Bill Barr.
Barr knew the institutions and the media well enough to know what he could get away with and what might generate too many questions.
The Mueller report was always a joke. There was never any way that Mueller would make an arrest and the report, which no one predicted, couldn’t accuse someone of a crime who was not able to defend themselves in court. So, since the DOJ couldn’t prosecute, they couldn’t accuse. The whole thing is a stain on American history, and the only reason we don’t know that is because of collective stupidity. Barr was and remains an idiot. No one read the report, and that’s how he got away with it. That and Miss McConnell

Can we not misgender as an insult? McConnell is a Confederate white supremacy supporter — use that as an insult as it’s factual given photographic evidence. Misgendering is offensive to nonbinary folks.
As for this: “No one read the report” — au contraire. There was the little problem of Barr’s pre-emptive statement combined with the OLC’s memo and Mueller’s opacity shaped by that memo, for starters. Combine that with courtier access journalism and the report’s results were effectively suppressed.
CoS Wiles and Bondi are friends and both worked at Ballard Partners (Lobbying firm).
Bongino is in over his head when it comes to doing Politics.
I understand that the MAGAts are testing new Biden conspiracies to purge the files among other flimsy justifications for doing nothing.
However, Bondi was quite clear in February that she had the files and client list ‘on her desk’ so even though DoJ is trying furiously to walk it back it’s still a problem for Convict-1. He knows he’s all over the files, for example Meidas Touch noted that Epstein had more published pictures with Convict-1 than anyone else, including girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell. Bondi had a job to do, and she’s doing it with all the grace of a pig handling a chainsaw. That’s why we should be happy she’s there instead of Barr, because AG Billy would have been much more deft in making this go away quietly.
Except Bill Barr wasn’t 100% successful in making Epstein disappear as a problem for Trump, because we are still talking about him.
Dan Bongino is acting like a “made man” with pangs of conscience.
Bongino is acting like a guy who has realized too late his future gigs post-Trump depend on his credibility regarding law enforcement.
Anybody know which reporter asked the question to Bondi about whether Epstein worked for American or foreign intelligence?
I don’t know, but Lev Parnas is pushing it, so it’s probably a lie. Or useful for Vlad.
Can you explain why a narrative pushed by Lev Parnas would be “useful for Vlad”?
I’m not saying that there was foul play here, but the guy was on “suicide watch” at what was supposed to be a high-level prison/detainment center. There should have been a functional camera pointing directly at him at all times. (And yes, I do think that everyone there who’s on “suicide watch” should have a camera pointing at them at all times. That’s the whole point of the place.) It still boggles my mind that he was able to commit suicide at all.
Is there data, how many other “suicides” at that facility while under “suicide watch?” If only Epstein, that matters. If only “suicides” which conveniently shut out having a foreseeable highly-publicized trial, that also matters. One expects only a handful of times, and not all off-camera. But, what’s the record. If it’s a fit facility the record should exist and show a pattern of fitness.
If Epstein records show those questions going unasked, why? A competent investigator wanting to see circumstantial evidence about suicide watch should have asked and found out. It is the FBI and not Keystone Kops.
The problem with saying, “Fire Pam” is who’d be offered by Trump next. Back to Gaetz?

The cynical response is that Epstien’s death was extremely convenient for many very powerful people, and that death only required a few jail guards to understand what their job was. Who remembers or cares what happened to them? This is primo conspiracy material, this and a chain of custody around materials seized from Epstien that makes the famous Biden Laptop custody chain drawing look almost sane. More cynicism. The FBI was supposedly good at this stuff in the past.
Follow the money. Get into who visited the NYC townhouse, when and for how long as best you can.
In particular, foreign and US intelligence community persons. Frequency of contact might be probative. Didn’t Epstein have security cameras? If so, is that a helpful direction to consider?
Also as a high profile suspect, why was Epstein in custody housed as he was and not in a more secure and modern location? Who had a voice in those decisions?

TY Rayne.
Why would Trump fire someone who is doing what he wants? Kash and Bongdoofus are far more likely to get fired over this. Loomer having a voice is patently ridiculous, as she’s a complete clown. What a shit show
So Mike Benz is making a big push for Bondi to release November 2020 DOJ Office of Professional Responsibility material involving Acosta’s interview and Epstein’s ties to intelligence.
Referring to the November 12, 2020 report:

Consider a major issue “dogging” Trump as far MAGA is concerned.
Before the current flare-up over Epstein, the biggest rift in Trump’s support has been over Israel-Iran and whether Trump will engage in further acts of military intervention on behalf of Israel. Though, possibly, the Epstein factor is an offshoot of that issue, as he is suspected of being involved with Israeli intelligence.
Benz has brought up Epstein and Iran-Contra, and complained that the CIA’s Iran-Contra “dogged” Reagan, as if Reagan was some passive bystander.
Would it be shocking if this is a playbook to push a narrative wrt Trump? Trump is being “dogged” by the issue of war with Iran and push for regime change, and now Epstein.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see a narrative that it’s the CIA or Deep State’s push for regime change (which probably has some truth to it), not Trump or Israel pushing Trump towards regime change. Or ties between Epstein and US intelligence.
I don’t get how Trump sustains a coalition from alt-right antisemites and Zionists. Both are at the core of his base, and yet seem diametrically opposed. And the issue would seem at some point to come to a head, eventually. Blaming the CIA for the Iran and Epstein issues tearing apart MAGA, and letting off Israel could be a way to maneuver that.
“I don’t get how Trump sustains a coalition from alt-right antisemites and Zionists. ”
C’mon, how many times do I got to say it: All too often, that’s the way the matzoh crumbles, into a half-baked cracker.
The gang that couldn’t even bullshit straight.
Lol, nice. That indeed is Loomer’s beef with Bondi.
Not being upset over potential coverups of Epstein activity. She’s upset Bondi botched the propaganda.
TY for responding!
That aphorism (is that what it is?) occurred to me long time ago.
I’ve now watched two or three podcast interviews of Julie Brown of the Miami Herald and Michael Wolff. According to Julie Brown, the cell camera footage shown was not of the cell where Epstein was located. The camera where he was located was operational but not recording. Bondi’s comment about files on her desk was not quite honest – the Epstein files would have trouble fitting in her office. There are likely investigative notes detailing the videos that could be released. In short, Julie Brown thinks that the current DOJ is about as forthcoming as the previous DOJs.
Neither Julie Brown nor Michael Wolff think Epstein had a “client list”. Wolff said he went to a number of Epstein’s gatherings in his NYC townhouse. Epstein was always a thoughtful host. If a guest had once expressed a desire for certain foods, Epstein made sure that on the next visit, a plate would be ready for him.
Wolff and Brown both think that Trump and Epstein were buddies. Wolff characterizes them as “hunting buddies”. Brown notes that Epstein was buddies with many.
I pass this along because both think that Trump doesn’t want the files released. And that the news media seems reticent. Maybe QAnon should be changed to TAnon? My own speculation is that Bondi thought she could redact unfavorable mentions or make other alterations without being noticed.
Thanks. I’ve seen what Wolff is saying (whom I find far less credible than Brown). But not so much Brown.
She was on Jim Acosta’s podcast. They both think that the major media outlets are dropping the ball on Bondi’s failure to release files.
Speaking of redactions… if Bondi had simply released the names of every Democrat/Liberal/Progressive to visit Epstein, plus those already known to have been on Epstein’s guest lists, plus any Republican types Trump wanted to smear… (leaving Trump off the list, of course) and simply stopped there MAGA probably would have been satisfied. So instead of all this clumsy idiocy, why not fake up a list MAGA would be happy with?
” As I rant on Nicole Sandler’s show today, what we saw in these few moments was Trump, whose super power is in being able to command attention,”
I agree that is Trumps super power, however I think everyone is missing something here, that being that this story (epsteins list) was brought back into the public eye specifically by Pam Bondi making her goofy pronouncement.
Then the story has been “reacted” to by various right wing yahoos, and now fridays cherry on top (trouble/infighting) is from Laura Loomer.
This story IS him using his super power to redirect attention away from the robbery of 400$million from FEMA.
He’s going after PBS again after they reported on it.
and Hello from a fellow Michigander!
And FEMA not showing up in Texas…
FEMA was there in Texas. They were standing around waiting to be actioned – which took three days and a signature from Noem.
Heckofajob Noemy!
Why did Trump in 2024 campaign on releasing the Epstein files?
Why did Trump not release the Epstein files during Trump 1.0?
Why did Bondi say to Fox News she has the client list on her desk last February?
Why now is it now the list doesn’t exist?
Why wouldn’t Trump 1.0 know the list doesn’t exist, if it truly doesn’t exist?
