Call on Dems to Vote for the Fourth Amendment over Fishing Expeditions

As I explained yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a classified briefing on the PATRIOT Act on Thursday.

Classified Hearing on: the PATRIOT Act and Related Matters

Thursday 10/29/2009 – 2:30 A.M.

HVC-301

Full Committee

By Direction of the Chairman

Presumably, the Administration hopes to convince Committee members to forego attempts to improve the PATRIOT Act, and instead make it easier for the government to conduct fishing expeditions into the beauty and home improvement buying habits of Americans.

Call the Democrats on the Committee and remind them that the Fourth Amendment does not include any exceptions for fishing expeditions.

Tried Conyers office three times now, always busy. Anybody getting through?

Bermans’s office said they’re getting lots of calls, took my opinion and thanked me.

Boucher’s aid wouldn’t comment on number of calls, but sounded harassed already.

    Will bother Nadler after pancakes.

Boxturtle (Probably won’t get to call everyone)

Going to be nice to everybody on the list, even the ones I probably shouldn’t be nice to. I’m saving a “special” call for Issa later.

Nadler’s office answer on the first ring, btw. Staffer said she was getting calls from all overthe country.

        Conyers still busy.

Boxturtle (Second helping of pancakes ready. Scott will have to wait)

  2. Jim White says:

My only remaining question in preparation for Thursday’s hearing is will the next highly publicized terrorist arrest be on Tuesday or Wednesday?

And of course it’s only my tinfoil hat that connects the need for a terrorist arrest with today’s Yahoo mail outage. /snark

there is one overarching question about these hearings, whether before a senate or a house committee,

    to whit:

why am i, a citizen, not allowed to know ALL the information available to the administration, which the administration is making available to the hjc in camera, which opposes change in the patriot act?

why are citizens like me not permitted to know the white house/doj/nsa position?

why may we not have that info available to us in order to evaluate the reasonableness of the white house opposition to change in the patriot act?

is this too much to ask in a democracy?

is this too much to ask of the obama administration – that america’s citizens be informed of information and OPINION that is guiding policy and pushing for congressionally mandated law?

    put simply,

why can’t the people of this nation know what the congress is being told in secret about the patriot act “renewal”*?????

*re-enactment with still greater powers granted might be more appropriate.
